Amazing skin, despite one major flaw
Note: I cover a major issue I had with the skin below, but despite this, I think it’s the best skin I’ve ever bought and wouldn’t hesitate to buy it again IF I was okay with the time for installation.I paid $40 for the Popskin Artistic Book Skin from Amazon after seeing the on Reddit. I have to admit, while certain parts of the skin like the tiny message on the bottom were too quirky even for me, I loved the overall aesthetic of the skin. With a GPD Win Mini, there aren't too many accessories out there and I am worried about scratches, so I had to try it out. Skins can either be a waste of time or they can be amazing. TLDR: I'm blown away by the quality of the skin, but lordy, it takes a long time to get everything prepped up before you can even put it on the device.Packaging:- Everything comes in a small cardboard sleeve and it’s well packaged. There are some extra items in the sleeve that are helpful in placing the skin over the right areas before permanent placement- Watch the video before you do anything to see the best way to put it on. Its 40 minutes long - and that’s deceptive as several parts of it are sped up to shorten the obvious. The video is accessed via a QR codeInstallation: Took me 2 hours and I’m good at putting on skins. I would recommend having an exacto knife, tweezers, and a hair dryer- The longest part of the process is removing the unneeded parts of the skin sticker pages. All the holes and extra ticker areas on each sheet. I spent 40 minutes alone on the bottom cover removing all the pieces on the vent holes with an exacto knife- The placement of the stickers on each area is not too bad, but take extra time to get a portion of the placement right before working on the rest. The overall effort involved getting the bottom on, the middle keyboard area, and then the back, then the top. The extra placement paper they provide is useful in putting down one piece at a time without overcommitting, but removing the placement paper can feel very precarious in stretching the skin.- I was surprised at how challenging putting down the keyboard area skin is - mostly because it is not a flat area with crevices for all the controls and in the area that surrounds the keyboard- I made the call not to put down decals for each button and keyboard key - that feels like overkill. It still looks great without that level of detail. I would hate removing this skin if I went into that much effort. You can see the results of this “partial” application of the skin in my pics. I think it looks better than a fully placed skin- I used a hairdryer in the end to really settle the skin on the corners of the deviceFinal Thoughts:- This looks incredible to me when complete, and feels like a layer of protection from minor scratches. The holes for every area of the device mean that ventilation, mics, and screw holes are unaffected- I probably would not have bought the skin if I knew the level of effort. It is worth the $40 when applied, but how much do you value your time and effort? Are you planning to keep the device long enough to enjoy this? Are skins and accessories part of your joy in owning the device?- I may be imagining things, but it does seem like the device is not as warm to the touch when it gets hot. That's nice!I love the skin and how it looks. I probably would get another Popskin for a device I value.
