would this be suitable for splicing a joist of about W50mm height 220mm?

Yes. Both the L80 or L98 are suitable both 560mm in length but would recommend the L98 for your timber size supplied. Plate set supplied with twist nails (all plate holes to be nailed). Hope that helps.

Is this product approved by Structural Engineers?

Structural engineers would have to carry out calculations to any repairs carried out to structural timbers in properties, which will be based on load etc, it's therefore difficult for such a product to be approved because all repairs differ, we can advise that they are manufactured from 1.2mm pregalvinised mild steel to BS EN 10142.
