This early "sideways" map reprint was made from a much larger map: "A New and Accurate Chart of the North American Coast", by Laurie and Whittle. We like it for the placenames along the coastline and for the nautical details such as the shoals and water depths. The depth numbers are probably fathoms (one fathom = 6 feet). Most of the names used in 1800 are still names we know today.
