Yes, these can be by programming a button with a macro with is really picking buttons, telling the remote which remote to use and self one of its key functions. We’ll say it another way. Set up the remote will all your devices, they when programming your Apple TV remote you change a key and attached a macro to it which is setting another device and setting a function from that device. You do all the programming from the app you have to install on your phone. Support folks are very helpful if you need help.

I have my equipment in a media closet. Will this remote work through walls?

It depends on the type of sensor and wall thickness. Bluetooth should work, but anything using infrared will need line of site.
