GREAT BOOK,BUT WRONG VERSION
I already have a copy of this book from way back and was hoping that this was the updated version. It wasn't.The book I received was the older version, and though not complaining about the quality of the book I received (it was in great shape),the actual product was not what was promised by the seller.I have ordered from another buyer also and hope that the book shown for purchase is the actual version. All in all though, not really upset,I mean how could you be with such a great Gamebook as City of Thieves. If you can grab any version of this great Gamebook in good shape grab it, it's worth it.I've painstakingly tried to put together what I think is the "complete" epic of just the sword & sorcery gamebooks of Fighting Fantasy.I think that this is the proper reading order. Here it is.01.The Warlock of Firetop Mountain (no brainer there)02.Caverns of the Snow Witch03.Forest of Doom04.Temple of Terror05.Crypt of the Sorcerer06.Return to Firetop Moiuntain07.Deathtrap Dungeon08.Eye of the Dragon (horrible book but does fit here)09.City of Thieves10.Trial of Champions11.Island of the Lizard King12.Armies of Death13.Legend of Zagor

A classic of the FF series and mythology. A must have!
This fifth title in the series, along with Warlock of Firetop Mountain(1), Forest of Doom(3) and Deathtrap Dungeon(6), helps form the bedrock of the Fighting Fantasy world of Allansia. The sense of being in a wild, dangerous, exotic city filled with adventure is very well described by Livingstone. One cool aspect is that many later books in the series refer to Port Blacksand and it's dark denizens in passing. It gives a nice sense of continuity and familiarity with the FF world to be able to say, 'Yeah, I know. I've been there.'Anyway, this is a must-have if you really want to have a good sense of the world-building that Livingstone and Jackson were doing with this series. Plus it's just a crackling good adventure!Adrian

Good product great price.
The product came as promised. The only cosmetic issue is that the top corner of the back cover has started to split. This is a birthday gift for my 9 year old so it's not a problem. I am hoping she'll like it. I enjoyed these types of books when I was a kid.

A Fun Interesting Adventure, with Some Disappointments in the Game/Story Design
Overall a fun solo roleplaying experience!4 stars for kids and teens, 3 stars for adults. The urban environment was creative, varied, and interesting. The simple battle system works great for those familiar with roleplaying games (RPGs). Tracking the increase and decrease of stamina, luck, gold, gear, interesting items acquired that may be useful later - all a familiar concept for RPG players. What could be better: there were a few areas of the quest where I felt railroaded into an unhappy ending (booted out of the city, the quest has ended). There should always be a way out and there wasn't always one. I also sometimes missed the option to easily return to a main crossroads to choose different paths (once I've finished one path). Occasionally the game chose for me - "you decide to go North" - perhaps needed to simplify the game, but I'd rather have choice. There were also some random choices, with no hints, that ended up with your success or failure (death) as the consequence. That's cheap! The end game (hunting for the villain), unlike the city environment, didn't seem very creative or interesting. And finally, the book has large font and is not long (total of 400 entries/paragraphs). I played the whole adventure in about two hours or less. I was expecting something a little more involved.Again, overall a fun romp.

One of my favourites in the series
My fourth foray back into the Fighting Fantasy series, and the sixth of the Wizard editions, City of Thieves has proved to be my favourite so far. It's a nice change to be able to explore a notorious town full of brigands and villains, as opposed to a dungeon, and while it may not have read like a Sunday afternoon stroll, it was fun exploring the streets and businesses of Port Blacksand. The experience was reminiscent of reading about Ankh Morpork in any of Pratchett's Discworld novels. The adventure is also not rudely or annoyingly taxing - on my first read-through I managed to make it out of the city alive, albeit with only 1 Stamina point and unable to complete my mission. But it was great that most of the "traps" were not lethal, but merely punished the reader with handicaps which made completing the missions harder but not impossible. It made for a much more fun read. All in all, I really enjoyed it, and the layout and map of Port Blacksand ends up being something quite pretty and a small source of pride. Great book; if you're reading Fighting Fantasy don't skip this one.

What have they done to the original artwork?
The Fighting Fantasy series from the 80's/90's are hands down, the best of the 'choose your own adventure' genre. But if you fancy a nostalgia trip, do yourself a favor and find older used copies, the artwork they've replaced the originals with looks utter crap. I mean, look at it! I can only assume it's a copyright thing.

Fighting Fantasy at its best
Potentially a 80's literate master piece. Played this when I was pre teen, accelerated my desire to read and a great use of the imagination. Our 9 year old has had his nose in the book and another FF book Deathtrap Dungeon. Loves the story and the die rolling for combat, the mapping out the path, so in the event of hitting dead end, easy to go back and start from a former decision point.

WHY? Why did you destroy the book with those illustrations?
I remember reading the novel back in the 90's. IT was a portuguese edition (original illustrations from the uk edition). After 30 years I thought I would buy this novel in english and try reading with my son so he could praticse english and at the same time have fun but these illustrations are pure crap. What a heck? Whereas the original had beautiful artwork that depict the city and the innhabitants here they just rewashed the illustrations to pure crap for 7 years old. This is not a book for 7 year old. Wtf? Don't fix if it's not broken. I was tempted to buy the all collection but I immediatly removed for the basket. This is pure crap. How to destroy my enjoyment and my enjoyment of passing the torch to my son. Oh well...

Good service, product as advertised
The delivery took some time thanks to a hold up at the UK-EU border, but customer service was very helpful and responsive. I got my book eventually and it's just what I wanted.

My 11 year old son loves this!
This is the first Fighting Fantasies book I've bought. My son is not a keen reader, but he actually looks forward to going to bed at night to read this book, which is unheard of!! The short sections taking you through the book really helps keep him concentrated and interested, and the scoring system is really clever, as it reminds me of a computer game, which my son unsurprisingly enjoys. Make sure you have a couple of dice at home though!
