Q: I want to insulate my attic would these be suitable for kneeling? Thanks

I'd say no. It doesn't offer padding. It is more useful for short stints, like "taking a knee". Also, the hard plastic shell wouldn't cope well with random hard debris. It's a problem when I kneel on rocks/stones.

Q: Which way up are you meant to wear these?

They don't have a right way up as such, but I always keep the clip-on buckles facing out to the sides. Less likely to catch each other when running etc.

Q: do they stay around knee? alot of pads just fall down after some use, im in commandos and looking for the best possible pads, these any good?

Depends where you wear them. I see a lot of different types of knee pads and opinions and personally I prefer the neoprene or lycra ones under the trousers. These ones are great and do the job, but in the line of work, you will find yourself constantly picking them up from around your ankles and having to re-adjust them if you wore them on top the trousers, (a lot of colleagues swear by them, but heat of ....., the last thing you want to worry about is re-adjusting equipment (and these colleagues are not the fastest of the bunch)). To wear them under the trousers, the straps get uncomfortable and itchy. Yet again, another unwanted distraction (and the hard surface of the pad + the sharp rocks to kneel on + the 40 kg on your back = high trouser turnover (should get new issued on demand)). An idea with these pads would be to wear them under trousers with a neoprene/ lycra (etc) stretchy knee supports under the pads for comfort (and endure the heat of summer)(I have never tried this idea but may give it a go myself).
