Bail-top jars (also called French Kilner, wire bail, or Lightning jars) are rarely used in North America for canning these days, although jars like them are still used to preserve and store foods in many European countries. They retain an old-world style and appeal that is lacking in the twist-top Mason jars we are more familiar with.Unlike Mason jars, which have a bare or plastic-coated metal lid, when wire bail jars are used for canning, food only contacts glass or a natural rubber (occasionally silicone) gasket, so they are preferred by those who wish to avoid leaching of metal or plasticizing chemicals, particularly when canning acid foods like tomatoes or sauerkraut.Also, unlike Mason jars, wire bail jars provide easy, no-twist, airtight storage for drygoods, or for fridge storage. I came across some at a large Swedish-named furniture store. Like most people, I have concerns about Chinese products, because of well-known quality control issues. My concerns are even greater when it comes to possibly adulterated food or food containers.These wire bail jars are made in Italy, and are very good quality. They come with (replaceable) gaskets. Because my homemade prepared mustard was such a hit this year, I bought two boxes (24) of these jars to keep up with demands of my friends and neighbors. I also bought 2 dozen wire bail bottles by the same manufacturer. This jar is very well made. I knew to trust it because I previously purchased the espresso cup from this company and they are so well made too. I use this to store espresso grounds when I grind extra and store it on top of my espresso maker. It looks nice, is airtight, but is not too hard to open. The coffee grounds smell very fresh when I open it. It's also very easy to scoop them out. I love the small size, it's exactly what I needed. I will be purchasing more items from this company (I have purple drinking glasses coming tomorrow actually).

The sealing mechanism got a bit wonky and bent after a couple years. May be user error since I have moved and it could have occurred from being in boxes. Otherwise a nice little sealing jar for storing stuff.

This jar is the perfect size for the homemade taco seasoning recipe I use (from Annie's Eats). It had enough room that I could dump in all the spices and close it and shake it up - no need to mix in a bowl - and a good seal that didn't leak when I did that. Now that I know that, I am excited to order a couple more for some of the other blends I mix up. Great jar. (However when I bought my jar the price was under $8...now they are over $15 so I will be waiting to see if that price drops!)

Okay, the jar is fine, the latch is tight, it has a rubber seal, and the hinge could be built a bit better (the hinge on my jar is what I would term "wonky", meaning that it is made poorly, isn't smooth, and could easily break off.). Other than that, it's a decent jar.However, when I ordered this jar I thought I was buying 6 jars that were 6-3/4. My Bad!! YOU ONLY GET ONE! In my humble opinion these jars are not worth the price they are asking.

It's on my desk. If you come to my office you can have some candy. I don't eat the candy but my coworkers do. What else is there to say? It's a jar!

But this one uses different size lids than the other 200ml jars we have and is also a different shape. I haven't been able to find the 'other' 200ml jars to match the ones we already have.

This is your typical airtight jar, hermetically sealed. Great for storing anything. However, I know that I can buy these locally for half the price.
