When the engine is running the revs are shown. When the engine is stopped the number of hours run are shown in low intensity. **Q: Is it alright to use on a 2 stroke and 4 stroke, and can you aim the tacho at the spark plug and get a rpm reading or do you put reflector tapes on** A: I haven't fitted this item . However the instructions with the item state that it is suitable for both two and four stroke engines The tachometer I understand picks up the impulses via the HT Lead. To gain this information the wire exiting from the unit is wrapped and secured around the HT.
