Q: Can a squirrel get out ?

Yes, definitely. Even if you used something as big as a trash can, squirrels can jump pretty high, so I suspect it could get out. Unless you went the filling it up with water route, in which case is would not be able to get out and would drown. I have some squirrels in my barn that need to be rehomed and I plan to use a have-a-hart trap.

dont know the exact length but it goes to the center of a 5 gallon bucket

Q: Can this be used to catch chipmunks?

Yes, but be sure to use a bucket deep enough so they can't jump out. The type of bucket pictured with this trap is not deep enough (found out with experience). However, this bucket will work if you plan to fill it with water. The chipmunk will not be able to get out and will drown. :-(

I have had the same experience using both peanut butter and cheese. I plan on moving it around to other locations with the hope that might help, but I may have the smartest mice or gourmet ones that do not like my choice of bait.
