The silicone mat lies flat, even after being folded into the case, and unfolds into a full size chess board that can be used on any hard surface. Case has good zipper, holds everything neatly, is about the size of a headphone case. The playing pieces are plastic, but feel heavy, good quality. The recipient of this gift is a chess fanatic, and had looked at many travel sets, but all felt cheaply made. He likes this set very well.

Good product for the price. Would make a great gift for school kids as well as vacationers. Really like mine….especially portability!! Glad I bought it! (I own too many chess sets but this one is a nice addition to my collection.)

Overall, happy with this. The case it comes with is nice enough, and the pieces are decent as well (if a bit light, but I guess that's what you want for travel).The board itself is silicone and lays reasonably flat. Because it is silicone, any irregularities in the table surface or debris beneath it are easily felt and can tip pieces... but play on a flat surface and you're fine. I wouldn't expect to play on grass, uneven ground, etc. as there is no stability to the board whatsoever.Otherwise, a nice set and great for taking in a motorhome, to a cabin, or setting up for quick games with limited space.

I was excited for this product, as it reminded me of the chess sets I played in tournaments when I was a kid. The pieces themselves are what USCF calls "single weighted," in that a full set of pieces is about 14.6 ounces. One thing I do like about this set is the board, which is made of silicone. The vinyl sets used by the US Chess Federation tend to retain a curl after being rolled up for storage, but this silicone board does not. Rather than rolling it up, you can fold it over and store it in a smaller space.However, I did not appreciate the coloration on the board. USCF vinyl boards use a cream color (they call it "buff") for the white squares, giving a gentle contrast. USCF silicone boards, too, have a pleasant low-contrast color for the white squares. This board, though, uses a pure white, giving it a high-contrast look that is uncomfortable on the eyes.This only gets three stars from me for being a poor value. For less money, you can get an official USCF set with lots of great color options and nicer plastic pieces.

The media could not be loaded. I haven't played chess in a while, so when I saw this set, I got excited and bought it immediately. It includes a basic set of chess pieces, a travel bag, and a silicone mat. Plus, it comes with a set of pieces for checkers too.

This chess set is much better than travel sets with mini pieces that always get lost. The pieces here are not weighted, or not weighted much, but they are felted and large enough to feel good in the hand. The board is large but can still fold up and fit in the carrying case that is included. It comes with bags for black and white pieces and checkers. It also comes with a pair of dice for some reason. All of these fit into this very small bag. The board does not need to be rolled. Even after being folded, the board lays flat without a lot of ridges and wrinkles. The bag seems sturdy and has a handle for easy carrying. Our family includes many avid chess players, so there is a frequent need for portable sets. The larger sets with roll-up boards can be awkward and ungainly, so this will be a nice change. If the pieces were weighted more, it might be a better set, and better for tournament play, but because they aren't weighted, the bag is easier to carry.
