What size screws do you need to fit this bracket?

It depends where you are putting it. Into studs, then probably 1/2"-1" drywall screws. If not use drywall screw in type wall anchors. If for the shelf measure the thickness of your shelf and use the appropriate wood screws. Hope this answers your question.

Will this support a top opening lid from slamming down on my head by holding it in a 90 degree position until i am ready to close it?

It locks in the 90° position and is designed for folding shelf or leaf. It does not lock in the folded position.

What is the max weight load?

In the product description it says 330 pounds per pair. I have used these on a desk where the desktop is about 20 pounds and we've put another 20 pounds on it plus elbows. So I've not tested the limit but hopefully the seller has.
