One Split Second: The Distracted Driving Epidemic - How it Kills and How We Can Fix It

This topic is so crucial and important that people discuss for hours after reading about a crash news.Vijay and Rekha(my brother in law and sister)lost Shreya,their beautiful daughter in a freak accident in 2007.Hats off to them that they started a Shreya foundation to spread the awareness about distraction free driving.Every year in August they organise a Raksha walk to make the youth understand the meaning and work on it.Raksha Bandhan is Hindu festival in the month of August when sisters tie rakhi(decorated threads) n bless their siblings with long life.Now after working on this foundation for all these years Vijay has written this book with all his hard work and emotions pumped in this.He has utilised his grief to help the society as far as possible.He helped Michael,a distracted driver to get over his guilt.Distraction can be,visual,manual or cognitive and Vijay has explained in details about all this.There is so much to learn and guide people with the ideas we get from this book.

n 2007 Vijay Dixit was expecting his daughter Shreya home from college for break. The driver of the car Shreya was in got distracted, crashing the vehicle. Shreya died at the scence. Knowing that his daughter was the victim of a growing epidemic of distracted driving he took action and created a foundation in her name the Shreya R. Dixit Memorial Foundation. The journey he took with his community, legislators, and law enforcement sets the bar for approaching distracted driving in each state and nationally. The book “One Split Second” was a collaboration with best selling author Antonia Felix and shows the reader not only what happens to victims but also the state of research into understanding driving behavior and where technology is going. If you are looking to arm yourself with the knowledge and power of what is going on with our driving culture than “One Split Second” is a powerful source.

Must read for the parents and the new drivers. Author has very creatively taken us through a journey of tormented parents who did not yield to the situation rather decided to battle through the life and give it a new meaning after loss of their dear daughter. Most of us would have given up accepting what destiny had decided, but Vijay Dixit and Rekha Dixit took this as an opportunity to create awareness for many others through different campaigns and educational events, this book being one of those, in an attempt to teach us how a split of second can devastate one's life. If we can overcome our temptations (to take that call, check the text message, pick up that napkin) for that very second, we can save precious lives on the road and avoid the sufferings for those left behind.

One Split Second is both inspirational and educational. Mr Dixit's book covers both the emotional and psychological cost of the distracted driving epidemic, as well as the various proposed solutions, in a well informed and emotionally stirring text. The car companies, governments and everyone who drives all share the responsibility to address this issue and this book will help drive the awareness from which the solutions will arise. Very well researched and written and above all an inspiration to me and I'm sure to others. When my kids learn to drive their first lesson will be to read this book. I have committed to keeping a copy in my car and 'gifting' it to the next distracted driver I see.....unfortunately that won't be too long.

I could not recommend this book more highly. Vijay does an excellent job sharing his personal journey of senseless loss while also including other stories similar to his family's without ever being too dramatic or depressing. The overview of the scientific evidence behind distracted driving is complex and powerful, but explained in a way which makes it very easy to understand and never boring. Reading this book was very enjoyable, while also being engaging and moving. Citizens of every age group can benefit from this book by way of following Vijay's example to live a life filled with empathy and compassion for others on the road and in our lives.

This book is eye opening and is very impacting. Distracted driving is a problem that is no addressed on a high enough level. This book has changed my perspective entirely.
