Go Devil
I was drawn to purchase this on hearing that it was a source of inspiration for Kentaron Miura, the author/artist of Berserk. The connection is apparent. In particular, there are grusome scenes, disgusting monsters and violent action all rendered with a high degree of detail and imagination. This is very much classic Manga, so I feel you have to compare it to silver age comics from the 70's or 80's. There's some writing here that comes across as pretty goofy and it also feels like it takes a little while before Go Nagai decides where to take the story. In the meantime it takes some odd turns. However, in volume 2 we start to settle into a more epic narrative that, in my view, pays off.The art is the real superstar here. The monsters in particular. It can be a little strange when a few pages of disney-faced human dialogue is suddenly interrupted by a hyper-detailed menacing demon with heads coming out if it's elbows. I mean, it's jarring, but awesome. There are two volumes of the classic series, both have nice hardback presentation and some colour pages. I like seeing this older Manga come over here. I think it gives us a little peek into the history of the medium and this is my favourite classic collection so far.

Better than the anime?!
I watched the anime a while ago and needless to say the ending left me wanting more and so I decided to read the mangas and - I can't stress this enough - I RECOMMEND! The binding is beautiful and the whole book is so well designed. I adored this story and would say anyone who likes a gritty horror with a muddled sense of good and evil, this is one for you. I'll definitely be rereading!

Classic series gets a classy book
This is the first book I have purchased from 'the classic collection' line and I am very impressed with the quality. Unlike the usual for manga the book is an A5 hardback. It is printed clearly and has some nice colour pages. I would definitely consider buying other titles in this range due to this.I haven't made it through the full volume yet, but I'm excited to see how it goes. I watched the modern devilman remake this year (devilman crybaby ) and it's fascinating to see what was changed /what was kept.

a fast paced, and nightmarish read
A fast paced, and nightmarish read. Volume 1 is almost a dark hero story where the human has taken possession of a demon to fight demons in order to protect humanity, even when he and his friend had to go through time and dimensions to do so as well. I

Go Nagai's classic manga "Devilman" Vol.1...a superb Hardback English translation!
Seven Seas have gone above and beyond the call of manga. This classic manga by Go Nagai, vol 1 of "Devilman" is a must own. (Looks great on the shelf next to Vol 2, too!). So good, I bought all of Seven Seas other Devilman manga (new and classic). I hope Seven Seas will bring us more Go Nagai manga, especially his other Dynamic Productions franchises such as "Great Mazinger"; "Getter Robo G"; "UFO Robot Grendizer", as well as the originals "Getter Robo", "Mazinger Z" and all the subseguent Mazinger and Getter sequels and reboots, and the 'alternate' manga that were released at the time of the 1970's animes. As for this "Devilman" Vol 1 hardback: A great start to bringing us Go Nagai's library of work in English, Seven Seas! KEEP GOING!

Espectacular

Devilman vol.1
Big fat tome, and thats just half the Devilman collection. The cover is good and the binding seems decent.A minor complaint of preference, but the pages are very white and smooth and don't really give that classic sensation while reading. But i understand that such a comprehensive book may want to go for thinner pages and a different type of paper for practical reasons. If you are interested in the collections of Go Nagai there is a Devilman vol. 2 and a Cutie Honey collection released in the same format, a good way to fill up your shelf.

It's a classic
Devilman by Go Nagai is a classic, and definitely a must read for anime/manga fans. This is an omnibus containing the first half of Devilman, and Shin Devilman near the end (a spin off where Akira, and Ryo travel back in time). This version is missing a couple of pages compared to the original apparently, but I didn't have a problem with understanding the plot. The story is pretty good, but it kinda feels like it's trying to be too edgy sometimes. The book is formatted beautifully. The cover is very nice, and so is the spine. The back looks good, but the font used for the back is kinda generic. The book is also pretty thick, as it has 680 pages. There's a couple of colored pages too, but some of the coloring is kinda messy (it's still pretty good though). The art looks a little bit like Osamu Tezuka's, but it can still be distinguished as unique, and has some very very detailed pages. This was a really good addition to my collection, and I hope that you'll decide to add it to yours as well.
