Lots of fun!
I purchased this for my 3.5 y/o son. I believe the age rating is 8+, and I can see why. He is not strong enough to "pump" it and make the balls shoot out. This is not a product flaw in any way, just sharing in case someone else wants it for a younger kid. I wanted this design because I thought it would be easier for him to shoot than a nerf gun with a trigger. I think I was wrong :) We'll definitely keep it around and help him shoot it until he's strong enough to shoot it on his own. For now, we have lots of fun with helping him shoot it. It is a well built product that we are very satisfied with!

Plain safe fun
Although this is not a true educational toy, it is a safe way to teach children about handling a gun without them or our house being destroyed. It is a load of fun and has provided hours of delight for grandchildren and their friends at our home. It seems that shooting a gun is a natural curiosity for children and this has provided an avenue for that curiosity. Of course, the Nerf toys have always been a preference for us and so one more is always welcome. There does not seem to be an age range for this item!! Even grandpa gets in on the fun.

Fun
I bought this for my son after leaving his cousin's house. He had fun playing with it there, so I caved and bought one. Since it's new, it's a little harder to shoot, but once we break it in it will be fun!

Works surprisingly well
This was my first experience with a ballistic Nerf blaster. The technology is very simple but works quite well. The pressure is sufficient to propel the ball pretty far and accurately enough for fun. I love the pop/boom sound as I shoot each ball. The sound terrifies my kids for a brief moment before the ball hits them and they realize it doesn't hurt them. But each new shot brings the same reaction. My one complaint is that the balls are not the same size as standard foam golf balls which would be a convenient, economical and readily available supply of ammunition. I would love to see Nerf provide a thread-on adapter for the end of the barrel that reduces the diameter appropriately for the smaller diameter foam golf balls. As it was, I was able to fabricate a passable adapter out of a PVC fitting that I sanded down the outside diameter to fit into the end of the blaster, then secured it with duct tape. It works okay this way, but really takes a vigorous amount of effort to get some velocity and distance behind the balls. The problem is the diameter of the little black rubbery ring that holds the ball in place while the pressure builds inside. It is sized for the OEM larger diameter balls, and I was not able to figure a way to secure a smaller ring in there for the smaller balls. So I had to settle for my PVC adapter solution. I'd love a cleaner, more effective way to accomplish this. But I'm sure Nerf would never support the idea because it would mean consumers are not buying their expensive ballistic ball refills.
