FibreDust Coco Mulch, 11- Pounds

The media could not be loaded. This stuff is truly incredible. It does such a good job of trapping and retaining moisture in the soil, and looks beautiful. It looks almost like bark at a glance but you can jam your hands in a huge pile of it, lightly brush your hands on one another, and every single bit of it will be gone and you'll have no splinters or residual dirt. It's a little pricey as far as mulch goes, but it's more efficient and lasts years longer than most mulch, so it's worth every penny. Also, unlike straw, there isn't the slightest outside chance that there are any lingering seeds that will sprout in your beds. This stuff is great.

This specific MULCH product is NOT DUST, despite the word FibreDust in the brand name. This MULCH is mostly fibers with occasional small chips of coconut husks. This brand pf coconut mulch is a terrific long-lasting mulch for pots, raised beds, or smaller landscape beds.We use this mulch only on the surface of soil. It works better than commercial mulches as it retards weed growth, conserves water despite Southern Califonia heat, does not tend to wash or blow away, and gives a beautiful texture (although rust color darkens with time). It slowly breaks down over a couple of years and becomes part of your soil for more tilth. (Tilth is physical condition of the soil for seeding or growing landscape or edible plants.) Once each year, we top off coco coir maintain a 3-4" layer.BEFORE USING: Turn this dense brick into fluffy mulch. Put the brick into a wheelbarrow, garden cart, or similarly large container. Apply sufficient water over time until your coco brick absorbs no more. This step may take as much as 30 minutes but is necessary and even fun to watch. Any leftovers can be bagged and saved for your next project.I have been using this brand of coco MULCH for many years. I notice many other vendors offering coco coir as well. Read product descriptions. Be sure to purchase coco MULCH if you want a layer of coconut husk fibers on top of your pot or garden soils. Coconut husk DUST is better for mixing your own potting mix.

Well, I didn't have anything to soak the mulch in so I had to get creative. I put the block of mulch into a heavy-duty plastic bag over night along with 5 gallons of water. In the morning I broke the mulch apart and spread it. Then did the same thing with the next bag the next night. Time will tell how the mulch lasts, but for now it's really nice. It's a little pricy for my budget, but I'm hoping it will last a couple years like advertised. Also, I lived up to its reputation of how much sq feet it covered. I wonder why it is so red looking, though, because it is supposed to be all natural and coconuts shells are not red.

I love this stuff! I bought several bales last summer to help keep in my raised berry beds. It takes a little bit of preparation- just place the block in a wheelbarrow, add water, and wait for the material to expand. After 20 minutes or so, I turned the block over to allow the material on the top of the bale to soak and expand. You can break it apart with your hands very easily when both sides of the bale have soaked about 20 minutes per side. The expanded coir is light and consists of 1/2 inch to about 1 inch chunks and doesn't compact easily- water goes right through without any problem. When the coir dries out, the dirt underneath remains moist much longer than using no mulch at all. The coir I placed last summer (9 months ago now) hasn't decomposed at all. I'm buying a few more bales to fill in spots where I didn't spread it thick enough- 2 to 3 inches is what seems to work well for me (1 inch isn't enough IMO). So even though this stuff ain't cheap, it does seem to last several seasons which will help mitigate the cost in the long run, so I plan to keep using it.

The amount of hydrated mulch emerging from the compressed bale is quite amazing. The final product can be used to bolster the organic component in homemade and store bought potting mix, or used as mulch for potted or bedding plants. When used as a mulch, the product forms a dense but porous insulating layer, which inhibits evaporation, keeps weeds at bay, and doesn't float away during heavy rain or hose watering.

This coco mulch looks great in the garden beds. I also believe it does a good job of keeping the soil cool (it gets over 100 most days in the summer here.). I did not find these easy to use as you have to soak them first. Also, there are lots of big chunks and hairy bits. While it looks good in the beds, the pieces are too big to allow for seedlings. I think I'll stick with wood shavings.

Really needed some mulch. Discovered this cool brand online. The expansion due to water being mixed with it pretty cool to see. The 11lb compressed block does require 4 gallons of water per the directions.My toddler son was amazed at how the entire box being used became filled with mulch after a few minutes of continually soaking with water hose.The Home Depot and Lowes stores were out of mulch of things at the time. Although this 11 lb block of compressed coco husk mulch is IMO overpriced, it is a cool product. Holds its color well. Easy to spread. I needed it to fill some holes and of course, my son needed some for his dump truck! lol

I love that I can carry the mulch brick easily to where I am going to spread the mulch, hydrate it in my garden cart or drug right there, and spread it easily. Beautiful color holds up well. Pictures above taken in April and July. Great in my raised bed garden; not a weed in sight. Wish it were possible to buy bulk quantities at a discount, as it's quite pricey if you want to do larger areas at 3" depth. Still, beautiful mulch that I will keep buying.
