The Dog Vinci Code: Unlock the Secrets to Training Your Dog

Only wish I had read it earlier...
I feel strongly about this book and also feel that you need to know a bit about my story to appreciate why I strongly recommend it, so please bear with me! I started reading this book I was 2 weeks into bringing home 2 shelter dogs home, after losing a furkid I'd raised since 5wks after 15 1/2 years. I thought I knew alot about dogs, but I've found out I knew alot about MY dog and how generally to raise a semi-well adjusted and well behaved, although not well trained, dog that came from an almost ideal beginning :)By the time I got a few doggie medical issues taken care of and felt was at the point where I knew what would need to be worked on a few more weeks have passed and I am at my wits end. You see, neither dog after leaving an unideal shelter situation (by this I mean a very poorly ran shelter compared to a good shelter environment, obviously none of them are an ideal situation for a dog) were exhibiting the same personalities I had experienced when meeting them.During this time I kinda just looked up and read the chapters dealing with specific behavioral/training/etc issues that I was having and was disappointed in the book, which had been recommended by a behaviorist we hadn't yet seen. You see, I felt that the book was a contradictory mess of being too specific about scenarios while entirely vague at the same time. I was convinced that this book could not help me, because it did not align with my specific scenario and wasn't general enough in the advise for me to successfully implement some variety of the suggestions. This was mostly due to having brought two dogs that had two very different sets of issues and needs into a home at the same time, if you are considering this (2 dogs at once) I would strongly advise you to do this only with two already bonded dogs from a GOOD rescue/foster situation where knowledgeable people have already evaluated and worked on issues with them.Going back to "at my wits end", I sent a frantic email to the behaviorist asking to be scheduled in for a private session knowing it will be a few days at least before this occurs. As I was losing my temper, my mind and my sanity I thought I'd pick the book back up and start from the beginning; hoping against hope that I would unlock the secret to understanding why this was such a great book that I was told it would be my . Good news is, by reading it from the beginning - I got it! I think the author says it best in I believe the introduction where, and I am paraphrasing, that he hadn't planned on writing another book and that in the written word you lose the emotion and feeling that you get from the spoken word but here a book was and it wasn't so much about specific training but as understanding the feeling and emotion. In reading sections of the book here and there, you can't understand it - this is a book you must read from the beginnning, or at least the first couple sections before you start flipping through it.I only wish I had read this book before deciding to bring home any dogs. I'm not sure yet if we can make things work out and I definitely will need the help of the behaviorist, but if I had read the book first I would have made a better decision about the dogs I brought home (and when) and wouldn't now be trying to rectify a situation where 1 person, 2 dogs and a cat are miserable too much of the time.I'm confident that this book will continue to help guide me (along with a behaviorist to help modify things to work for the convoluted mess I made) and if I had been smart enough to bring one dog at a time in the house, it just very well might have been my version of the bible.

Keeps me smiling....
John Rogerson was reluctant to write another book, but we (and our dogs) are better off for this book now released in paperback. I bought as many as I could to give away to my friends and fellow dog enthusiasts. This book is not just full of essential knowledge which he brings to the table from his life-long experiences working with dogs, but he also shares his dry British wit. Since I had been to his seminars before, I could hear his accent break through the written word. Next to the importance of using human emotion to communicate with your dog, I believe the author values humor. I so appreciate this aspect of the book, since the consequence of not understanding your dog's code is so dire. We need to smile a little. Certainly we are all aware of the huge problem of dogs that are abandoned on the streets and in shelters because of behavior problems. I believe that the philosophy he shares can change this issue. This is an interesting read for pet dog owner and trainer alike. His wife's illustrations of the emotional human faces are charming! The tone of the book is light, not academic. In fact he prides himself in using shorter words than most canine behaviorists! Most of us struggle with the plight of dogs left behind and at shelters and are sympathetic with the burden taken on by rescue groups. This little book needs to be on every rescue groups resource list. At the price Amazon is selling them, you could easily donate a copy to your favorite rescue group...Know a breeder? Give them a copy! First though, buy your own copy and enjoy!

I would recommend this book
Never trained a dog before. American Bull Dog pup was 16 weeks old when I got her. Just following the instructions for the initial training of a puppy and specifically for my breed of dog has made training so easy. Granted it helps having a smart dog. However, smart dogs frequently want to do things their way. I haven't needed every chapter of the book. I pick & choose. I would recommend this book.

This Book Rocks!
John Rogerson is one of those brilliant talents in the world whose abilities tend to stun the average person. I've personally attended several of his workshops and have never met anyone with a more complete understanding or a more profound intuitive grasp of dogs. What is even more unusual is that, unlike many extraordinary talents, he is able to communicate effectively with others about what he is doing and why. If you are looking for a book that will solve all of your problems with your dog, this is not it. In fact, no such book has ever been written. Training dogs is not about techniques, it is about relationships, and relationships are complex creatures. On the other hand, I have never read a more complete and enlightening book on training the pet dog. Read this book and you will never think about your canine companion in the same way again.

Informative, helpful and worth the read for any dog lover
I read this as a recommendation by a friend on Facebook and even though I am only half way through I have found it extremely interesting. I deal with a lot of dogs and use methods of pack leadership. I love the part about reading expressions and am going to suggest that part at least is read by someone taking on a puppy. Highly recommended.

Pinch of salt type of book still would recommend to any one who is thinking about becoming a dog trainer.
Take it with a pinch of saltthere are some interesting ideas in the book. The naivety maybe due to him having no educational background ( which he has admitted with confidence on many of his talks which can be found on youtube).A good read but i wouldnt consider it a Dog training Bible (Unless you consider a bible a book filled with contradictory statements which go against Science research than i guess you could consider it a bible which you can pick and choose the good bits and leave the rest)

Described my dog!
I wish I'd read this book before I got my second dog - I was told to keep them apart but not why - now I know. He had some very different ideas, like falling over to teach your dog not to pull, but it is very readable and I learnt a log.
