The indie horror where The Thing (1982) meets Lovecraft and Barker....and everything you loved about 80s horror!
IF YOU LOVE 80s HORROR JUST GO SEE THIS NOW. But here's a review anyway...Small town sheriff Daniel (Aaron Poole; The Last Will and Testament of Rosalind Leigh) brings an apparently drunk, injured man to a hospital. Preparing to relocate, the hospital is running on bare essential supplies and minimal staff including Dr. Powell (Kenneth Welsh; TimeCop, Of Unknown Origin), nurse Allison (Kathleen Munroe; Alphas) and trainee nurse Kim (Ellen Wong; Silent Night).Shortly after admitting the patient things get weird…fast! A nurse kills a patient and mutilates herself, the phones and even police radio go out, murderous cultists surround the hospital, the electricity goes out, and you know the Lovecraftian [bleep] has hit the fan when patient zero has bloody whipping tentacles emerging from his face! The dialogue is really just passable with equally unimpressive writing (but a great premise), but I’m going to call this a great horror film anyway! Written and directed by Steven Kostanski (Manborg, The ABCs of Death 2 segment W is for Wish) and Jeremy Gillespie (Father’s Day)—two men reared on the creative and effects side of the camera—I am dying to see what they can do with a little more experience (now under their belt) and a bigger budget on their next project. And there better be a next project because, and I think I speak for all of us, we want more of this! Why? Because the effects were OUTSTANDING!!!!! Their premise was also a story I’d like to see further developed—but I can’t explain that without huge spoilers. We graduate from some flailing face tentacles to a hulking, disfigured amalgam of human body parts and tentacles. It’s all practical effects and it’s all glorious. Even if clearly birthed from a humble budget, this is exactly what gorehounds want! When the creature kills, it pumps its tentacles down its victims’ eye sockets and other orifices so as to absorb more helpless cadaver into the monster’s mass. A head even emerges tearing its way out of the mutated body—much as The Thing (1982)—and we see lifeless, shambling mounds of reanimated undead flesh with melted mozzarella-gooiness.The violence and gore includes loads of blood, wounds and flesh rending. There’s even something of a metamorphosis through a messy birth scene. But far more gratifying than the slimy masses of tentacles that await is the 80s homage to practical effects and iconic horror influences worn on its sleeve. Not just the conceptual aspects of Lovecraft’s madness or Clive Barker’s Labyrinth (here the Abyss), but we find special effects honoraria to The Fly (1986), Hellraiser (1987) and Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988).This film offers a lot…but it may not be what you expected. If you want to see something that will unnerve you and frequently make you jump—watch Life (2017). Want something with a slower tension built up through an atmosphere of uncomfortable mystery and dread? That’s The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016). No…this…this atmosphere is pure weird unsease…and it’s gross! As I hinted before on the writing, this is a passable movie…but a passable movie with outstanding special effects and an excellent premise that honors (not rips-off, but honors) all the things we love and miss about 80s horror. The ideas brought forth by these filmmakers are exceptional and I must see more projects spawned the Abyss.Go see this. Give them your money so they can go make more movies like this!

Cosmic Horror for a film is hard, but this did it well
Decent film, reminded me of the Thing film from the past. Lovecraftian and surreal horror imagery. I would have enjoyed a deeper cast, people i would have felt more for, but it did well with the essence of cosmic horror.

It has everything that I love in a good
When i first saw this movie advertised, I was supper excited. It has everything that I love in a good, horror film. Recently I watched a video review on it, and it got me even more stoke. I made a mental note right there and then that I was gonna be watching this film sometime the coming weekend. Which I did, and here are my thoughts!Although The Void, is a unique movie, its themes, special effects and imagery are call backs to john carpenter, Clive barker, hp Lovecraft, and that just to name a few.Overall; sadly, i have to say that the movie wasn't quite as good as i was hoping. I was really hoping that this movie would blow me away as it has been quite a while since i have seen a new horror film that has just blown me out of the water. Which in hindsight, could account for some of my disappointment in it. This was the first thing I thought, but, after giving it some thought I really don't think that this is the case.My biggest gripe with this film is it doesnt really tie a congruent story together by the end.Basically the trailer and description of the film is accurate to what its pretty much about. But by the end of the film, I found my self wondering what the heck was the over arching point. Now don't get me wrong, as a long time horror buff, I don't need a film that is perfect and answers everything. But if the overall premise is simply a (spoiler alert) old doctor, whom because of loosing his daughter, went made with desire to have her back, found a way to use the occult to get in contact with lovecraftian powers, and hence, bring her back as some tentacle beast and along the way impregnate a fellow nurse/friend with an alien baby as well... well... you certainly accomplished that. but its a bit light.Perhaps the deeper meaning of the tale was lost on me. Overall this is a pretty solid horror movie, but, it could have been much more then it turned out and i was hoping it would be.Give it a watch, you be the judge.

Lovecraftian Cosmic Horror Wrapped in 80s style goodness with lots of gore.
If you're a fan of Weird Fiction, Cosmic Horror, and Lovecraft... this movie is for you. It's set in a 80s style with the electric music and all practical effects. Excellent storytelling that kept me captivated the whole time and left me feeling like much of Lovecraft's works do...gazing into an Abyss, a Void, reviewing all the madness you've seen and not being sure what to do with it. It was excellently executed even if it had a rough start. Now, I'll admit I rewound a few a times to fully soak in some of the dialogue, and even though it did have some 'eh' stuff here and there and I didn't care too much for the attempts to mingle some religion in, the idea of this 'other realm' 'older than time' is very Lovecraftian. This is definitely a movie in a category of its own and although it deals with such alien aspects, please note there is a lot of gore. Think running at the Dunwich Horror, tentacles flailing, with a fireman's axe chopping and bashing it to gooey bits while it screams in half-human voices and guttural infant noises. That said the people that die tend to die graphically too.In short, I really personally loved it as a Lovecraft and Cosmic Horror fan, but I also understand how some horror fans might not care for this sort of thing even with the gore. If you want a otherworldly horror with a focus on the infinite vastness of space and what things may possibly exist in those realms, you'll like it. If you wanted a easy-to-understand slasher film like Nightmare on Elm Street, or a supernatural story like the Ring or Paranormal Activity...this might not be for you.

Very cool horror film; hard to find in region 1 anymore: lucky this puppy plays all region despite being marked region 2 (b etc)Appeals to fans of Clive Barker, Lovecraft and Silent Hill. Most effects are practical and film was shot on a shoestring held against comparable (yet inferior) works. Bravo to all involved.

Top quality B-Movie
When it comes to cinema, I think people have lost touch with what makes a fun film. As an example what I mean, just look at how people perceive horror films in 2019. The movie industry is moving with the times and trying to please the mobile phone generation. A generation (or two) of people who can't keep their focus on something unless it is plastered all over their little smart phones. To compensate for their non existent attention spans, we have hundreds of movies about ghosts with huge gaping mouths and predictable obnoxiously loud jump scares every two minutes. There's no longer any creativity or mystery in these films.Thankfully, there are people out there like Jeremy Gillespie and Steven Kostanski who remember how fun movies were back in the day. When the films were not necessarily about the quality of the acting or the script, but it could have been the combination of dialogue so bad that it's fun and outstanding visual effects. There of course were the exceptions thanks to makers like David Cronenberg and John Carpenter who always tried to do something more unique with their films. They didn't necessarily explain what was going on, instead they did a great job of shocking you with horrific gore and visuals as well as great tension building. This is the kind of film making you can expect from The Void.Despite the fact I enjoyed this movie, I will go on record to say that The Void is by no means a classic of the genre. It is however a great homage to what we have seen the past and something we don't see in the current movie world. The film is pretty basic and easy enough to follow for those who pay attention. A lone police officer picks up a random drug user who has escaped a slaughter in some abandoned farm house. He takes him to a local semi abandoned hospital where he is locked up and disturbing events start to occur. Think of it of crazy cult activity featuring some Lovecratian tentacle work and creature design that would make Clive Barker proud. The story quickly devolves into madness and confusion, the kind of thing you'll find in a lot of H.P. Lovecraft's best books. Because the characters are disorientated, confused and being mentally manipulated, it leaves us viewers with no basic plot to follow. It instead expects you to use your imagination, something sorely lacking in the horror industry in 2019. This aspect of the movie I loved as it was a nice change from the usual Annabelle possession nonsense and the 5,000 Paranormal Activity sequels and prequels. These moments involve spooky dark corridors, dimly lit medical wards, a morgue and a set of stairs that would give anyone the willies. Each set is creepy and oozes with as much brain matter as it does atmosphere. The highlight of the movie is without a doubt the creature and gore effects. I haven't seen anything on this scale in a horror movie for a VERY long time and quite frankly, I thought it was beautifully done. There is little to no digital effects used in the film and it gives the film this very real quality. Each monster (or demon) looks juicy and so life like that you could reach into the tv and sink your fingers into their bloody stumps. Gorehounds who like me, enjoy movies by Lucio Fulci or '80s classics like The Blob and The Evil Dead will be right at home here. It is worth the price of the Bluray alone, in my honest opinion. The acting through out the movie is a bit hit or miss but it never got to the point where I thought it was bad. It is a low budget horror movie and I would never expect the acting to be top quality. I will give the actors some credit, when they need to put their emotions through, they do it with much success. Just don't go expecting any of them to win an Oscar for their performances, or the screen writer for that matter. My overall opinion on The Void is that it is a great homage to the horror films of the '80s. It's a disgusting confusing mess and I wouldn't have it any other way. This is a film for people who enjoy proper horror films, enjoy a bit of atmosphere, suspense and mystery. If you want endless jump scares, go look somewhere else. Fans of The Thing, Hellraiser or the previously mentioned The Blob should definitely consider picking this thing up.
