How big of an area is this product good for?

Not that big.....a small room would be best. Also MAKE SURE THE FILTER IS PLACED WHERE THERE ARE NO OBSRUCTIONS. I plugged it in by a window sill and found that small bit of wood was obstructing the air filter's effectiveness.

How good are these for kitchen odors from cooking onions and other spices?

you need the bigger units for a room the size of a kitchen

I have birds, and it seems that no matter how clean I keep their cage, around that area still smells. Think this would help?

I think it might. I bought them to keep at work because the business next door is a mechanic and the fumes seep into our unit. It's especially strong in the bathroom and it was gone after I left it plugged in there overnight. I also keep one at home by my cat's litter box.

with the trueair filter which side should face you the blackside or the blueside

I put the black side facing out (towards me). My air filters are white on the other side. What kind of air filter are you going to use?
