## Overview

API Melafix is a 1.87L liquid remedy formulated with natural tea tree extract to effectively heal bacterial infections and repair damaged fins, ulcers, and wounds in freshwater fish. Ideal for both treatment and prevention, it supports healthy aquarium ecosystems by reducing disease risk, especially when introducing new fish. Trusted by thousands, it’s a must-have for maintaining vibrant, stress-free aquatic life.

## Description

The best way to keep your aquarium clean is to maintain good water quality. This will keep your fish strong and vibrant, as well as preventing disease.
It is important to test your aquarium water weekly to verify good quality in addition to a bi-weekly partial water change of no more than 25% to help reduce toxic buildup, remove debris the filter missed, and replenish the oxygen available to fish.
Feed your fish twice daily only the amount of food they can eat in 2 to 3 minutes depending on the species. Some fish such as bottom feeders and algae eaters will need up to 30 minutes to 2 hours. Overfeeding & low quality nutrition cause unconsumed food and more excrement which cloud water and raise harmful ammonia levels, possibly leading to fish loss. Take time to observe fish and the water temperature to ensure they are active & healthy.
An aquarium is a closed environment and in order for fish to thrive, water must be similar to that which could be found in their natural environment. Poor water quality can cause fish stress, illness and even loss. The 5 common water quality parameters are Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, and pH - all of which may vary over time and all are invisible to the eye which is why it is important to test weekly with API MASTER TEST KITS or API 5-IN-1 TEST STRIPS. It is also a good time to add API STRESS ZYME to keep your aquarium & gravel clean.
In a closed aquarium environment there are no natural rivers or streams to carry away debris and other waste materials. It is important to renew 25% of the aquarium water every two weeks. When you change the water, it is important to know that tap water contains chemicals that make it safe for us to drink but harmful for fish, therefore add a water conditioner such as API STRESS COAT.
It is important to change your filter media & clean gravel monthly, however in doing so it can disrupt the fragile ecosystem of your aquarium. Use API QUICK START to strengthen it with ‘beneficial’ nitrifying bacteria that will naturally consume toxic compounds and help prevent fish stress. Also recommended when starting a new aquarium or changing the water.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: This site list melafix from two different venders, mars and pond care. big difference in priceing. are they the same?**
A: I've used several different brand types of melafix and found that they work just the same.

**Q: Is it safe to use post-expiration? In other words does it turn toxic to fish or simply starts to lose the effectiveness?**
A: I would think if this is not very much over date, like 6months or so, it would be fine. If it is still sealed, it will be like new or almost. If it is older, it probably, hate to say as this, but I would think it will be okay to use, and just be weaker or maybe not. If you are in doubt, I would buy a new one to be certain. In the past, they never put dates on anything, and now a days they do and the things were used and were okay. Best answers I can give you. Good luck with your issues.

**Q: I guess my butterfly goldfish has fin rot. How should I treat it? It is in a pond with other healthy fish.**
A: If the other fish are healthy. Then you should remove it in to a isolation tank. Be sure to use the pond water when you fill it. There are instructional videos on YouTube that will show you how.

**Q: How is this different from regular strength? They both have 5% concentration in a 64 oz bottle.**
A: My advice is to please ask a professional breeder for direction. Off the self purchases is "gambling" to me!
Best wishes to you and the Fish :)

Our fish was showing signs of septicaemia with blood spots, scales peeling away, very lethargic, not eating and fins that looked damaged beyond repair, so after a full tank change with 24 hour settled water, all plants removed to prevent further damage from brushing past, I followed a set routine of daily treatment using this treatment, within 2 days she became more active, and obvious signs of repair were visible, blood spots were disappearing and her fins were slowly starting to move more freely. It’s been 10 days and apart from the damaged scales on her side that are still healing, she’s back to herself, swimming, begging for food every time she sees anyone, safe to say my son is super happy that he’s not got to say goodbye to pepper just yet. Can’t recommend this product enough, well worth the money, the size was plenty for what I needed, but I’ll just continue to use it bi daily for the next few weeks to ensure that it is fully treated and doesn’t come back. And because she’s eating again equivalent to a St Bernard ( if we let her ) there’s less debris in the tank so the tank has stayed clearer. Also I’ve just noted that pre treatment her back was arched and looked so poorly, today she’s back straight, able to buoyant herself easily.I have attached pictures from day 1 to day 10 to show the difference.Absolutely superb result.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Definitely helped my poorly fish .
*by on Reviewed in the United Kingdom 18 September 2025*

Bought this in hopes it would help my young Koi that just hasn’t been well since it was gifted to me 3 months ago . I had no idea what was wrong & we have no aquatic vet close by so after googling symptoms in great detail & doing some research it kept coming back as bacterial infection. I’ve had my other fish 20+ years & never had to use any chemicals in my pond or treat any of my fish ..Decided to give melafix a go & im really glad I did . I isolated him in a tank & im currently on day 6 of the treatment . He’d been bottom sitting in my pond for weeks , he’d never come up for food at feeding time & he spent 24 hours a day hiding behind my pond plants . As you can see in the video I took yesterday he’s now swimming around perfectly normal & happy , Ive been using koi flakes to feed him whilst he’s in the tank (usually use MediKoi) & it’s the first time I’ve seen him eat since he fell ill . The melafix also cleared up a red bloodshot patch he’d got underneath his body within the first dose of treatment . He’s not stopped swimming around & playing with the bubbles from the air stones 😂 I’ll be gutted when I have to put him back in the pond . I’d definitely recommend this stuff . I thought I was gonna lose my fish he was so lethargic & unwell but it took just 3 days of this stuff & I saw positive signs .Just to add , it did make the water go incredibly cloudy and my koi did start rubbing a bit against the airstones which can be a side effect to using melafix . I did a 25% water change and added 2 tablespoons spoons of pond salt , this helped with any irritation / stress .
