You would wipe it with a damp cloth or antiseptic wipe rather than wash it. I’m not sure it had a recommendation.

What material is this? Can it be recycled?

The mat is made from a thin soft plastic material with sponge on the inside. So that it’s easy to clean and soft for the baby. I wouldn’t think that it could be recycled, unless of course you’re passing it onto someone else to use for their baby.
