Has anyone here actually had to use it yet and how effective was it? We have a lot of people in our local park who do not leash their dogs.

Yes, my neighbor has 2 pitbulls that don't like when I mow my lawn. They are behind a 4 ft fence & besides the constant barking, growling & lunging, they even attempt to jump up when I get near to cut along the fence line. The owners never come out to control the dogs so in order to feel safe I put on my sunglasses & a face mask, grabbed my mace & aimed for their nose/eyes. The stream went at least 3-4 feet directly to where I aimed it, the dogs shook their heads, sneezed, & kept attempting to attack the mower through the fence but eventually they gave up. I was very happy with the results. It didn't harm the dogs, just left some orange residue on them. They were out later on that day relaxing in the sun. (They have a doggie door so the dogs go in & out as they please, no owner interaction/supervision) I carry it with me on all my walks.

belt clip? or key ring?

The cans come with a flimsy belt clip. I never used it, I just drop the cans in an open-top jersey pocket for quick access. I haven't tried any type of key ring although I've seen them on Amazon.
