Q: are these plants in pots and what size pots?

Yes these plants are in pots . I've had them about two years now so am unsure of the pot size. It was either 5" or 9".

Q: Mine have just arrived, do they go straight in the ground or pot for a while?

I grew mine on for a few weeks in the pots. They are now about 3' tall and flowering well. I would suggest you do the same, especially with this spell of dry weather. Lavatera's are hardy, and flourish in dry sandy ground, but will need watering whilst young plants. I found it safer to bring them on in their pots first.

I can only say that I think lavatera can be planted in the shade. I have planted in the shade before and have had a very healthy plant. The 3 I have just bought are in a large pot so I will be able to move them about. Perhaps this is something you could think of doing.

Q: Do the lavatera come. up every year ?

Yes, Lavatera's are perennial. They like sandy soil and prefer not to be waterlogged, but will flower for long periods from early summer till late autumn, every year, and are quite long lived. The Barnsley variety grow to about 4ft tall.
