[insert] boy (Kate Tufts Discovery Award)

This is an absolutely beautiful book. I have been a fan of Danez Smith’work for a long time, and this book is full of beautiful, heartwarming, gut wrenching poems that talk about different issues that are faced by people in the world, whether it be be race, sexuality or self knowledge, this is a truly stunning book of poems. One of my favourite books.

This is an excellent exploration into the experience of being black and queer in America. I absolutely loved every poem in this book. Some I read more than once because I needed to feel them again.

Basically my bible and 100% the reason for my not going insane in 2018 after a rapid succession of traumatic events. My room mate at the psychiatric hospital read a different passage every night and gifted me with her copy upon being discharged and left a note on the inside directing me to read the last one on my own since we didn’t get to it. I’ve never felt so empty and full at the same time. I, too, have swung my entire life to keep myself from singing. Thank you.

Terrific collection of poems. Just flawless and stunning. Be sure to check out Smith's performances on YouTube. It amazes me how well these poems work on the page and on the stage. "Genesissy" floors me every time.

Danez Smith will grip your heart and guts with his words. A must read. Follow this artist as much as you can.

This a moody, moral, riveting meditation on black male procreation and genocide. A riff, as it were, in an ineffably blue melancholy. I would include this work in cross-disciplinary highschool, university level and post-graduate studies. And, I mean for All aptitudes, selectivity ratings and races!
