Broil King 987847 Sovereign 90 Natural Gas Grill with Side Burner and Rear Rotisserie

I had a smaller Broil King grill for 17 years and loved it. We had cooked turkeys on the rotisserie for the past few years and had big parties with burgers or chicken. The parties got bigger and we were running out of room and the old grill was finally falling apart. The new XLS 90 is fantastic! Everything about it is more heavy duty and professional grade. I think we will be able to do two turkeys this year.I bought this Used in Like New condition for about half the price of Brand New. I was a little nervous about all the parts being there in the box but it all came as advertised. It was like most of the grill had never even been removed from the box.It had to be shipped by truck and the freight service was accommodating, friendly and professional.The parts bags were a couple of crews short in the sealed bags but I had what I needed on the finish the assembly. The assembly took only a few hours and was much simpler than I expected. There is not that many screws and parts that need to be put together. I highly recommend this grill for avid grill masters!

The grill is great. I have no problems with it. Heats up to 700 degrees with no problem in minutes. I used the rotisserie for the first time last weekend and decided too refer another set of tines to do two chickens at once. No complaints what so ever with the grill itself.The packaging was horrible. You know it's a bad packaging when FedEx calls you and tells you that the box is missing a piece and the there's tape all over trying to hold it together. When it arrived the fourth piece I pulled out was dented and bent. I contacted amazon customer service and they offered a discount or ship another. I decided to continue to put it together because I wanted to see if any other parts were missing. The last piece to go on was cracked. And I was missing two small pieces. In short packaging leaves a lot to be desired but the grill itself is fantastic.

Product design and quality has been on decline. I use to like Broil King grills due to the robust nature of the product and the fact that they are made in North America, however my most recent purchase of the sovereign 90xl was a disappointment. From the fail in packaging, the whole box was destroyed, to the bad design and poor instructions riddled with errors. Buyer beware, these grills are shipped in poor packaging and ours had damage and parts missing, so much so that the grill was impossible to assemble. This coupled with the fact that the box was beyond its limits, Amazon refunded me and instructed me to donate the grill or recycle it which I had no other option due to the lack of parts. Broil King customer service was no help as I was bumped around, the whole thing was a colossal waste of time. I did the right thing and bought another brand locally.

Buy the Barron model 9635-87. It has cast iron grids which perform better for grill marks than stainless. Sq. inches of cook surface is more than the Sovereign 90. The Barron is better built. Be a where that the stainless steel side shelves do get hot to the touch soput a wooden cutting board on top to prevent items from getting hot. The Sovereign was shipped in a damaged box and the hose for the gas was not protected well enough and the insulation on the hose was damaged. Also, other parts were bent. Ended up buying the Barron locally for a fair price.

Background: Have a Costco Sonoma (discontinued) All stainless steel grill with infared rear rotisserie and wanted to upgrade. What a disappointment.1. Instructions were of poor print quality and part descriptors were missing or wrong.2. Screws required a # 3 square head driver and not a Phillips head screwdriver3. Grill and burner parts are poor fitting and do not align.4. Rear rotisserie in a flame burner and not infared (my fault, should have done more research)5. Rotisserie rod interferes with side burner6. side burner and main burners will blow out if too windy7. inner burners burn cooler than the outer ones making cooking on this a new experience8. Duel grease traps are in the back of the unit, very cheesy and cheap aluminum foil dishes that had holes in them when received and are hard to replace and clean. Had to line them with foil and will not fit into the recesses.9. when initially starting up, had a very strong odor of burning/melting plastic.10. Side are rear panels non ss sheet metal.11. Cover and tub are cast Aluminum12. needed 3/8" to 1/2" pipe adaptor to attach the gas line.Overall, this unit is a looker and not a cooker. However, it does work and serves it's purpose, but it is nowhere near the quality or performance that I was expecting. As stated in the beginning, our Sonoma grill does not have any of these issues.The seller was outstanding and the shipping company was first rate and should is not being faulted for this product.

The grill arrived so fast that it was amazing. Fairly easy to put together but some of the drawings could be a little more detailed. Minor glitch with a missing piece (magnet on one of the doors for closure) but Broil King fixed that problem. Broil King customer service is a little slow on the uptake but they eventually solved my problem. My grill is natural gas and all connections were excellent. Cooking on the grill has so far been very good to excellent with ease of use, even heating, and very good temperature control.

Very thick and solid lid and firebox block wind well and retain heat very well in winter, for grilling and also baking and for rotisserie-ing. You can use this as an outdoor oven with very precise heat control - we both roast and rotisserie multiple chickens at a time for example. Also keeps rain out of firebox. I believe it retains heat so well we use less gas than with our previous all stainless steel grill. Burner controls are very smooth and precise. We prefer the full width open flame rotisserie burner that this grill has to the infra red or ceramic one we had on previous grill - more cooking area and more even cooking. Excellent quality stainless steel grill grate - very thick and heavy. The main burner tubes are very heavy duty and for the most part provide precise and even heat (see below). Tons of cooking area - this is a big solidly-made grill.Only reason for four stars is the difficulty of assembly (attaching firebox to stand was tricky - good thing we have an extra small socket set with extension) and one tube burner has a bit of a 'flare' or hot spot where flames shoot out (about a one inch section).We use this grill with four GrillGrates (google that - you'lll be happy you did!) rather than the stock grill grates, and the results are EXCEPTIONAL, but we have tried it without and it is fine.Otherwise highly recommended. Shipping was reasonably fast from Amazon, right to our door.
