The sun swells the locking mechanism on my French doors when left open. They almost shut but not quite would this hold them if I need to go out

If the doors are ajar then the lock would not hold. In my opinion.

I have weak hands would tjis be suitable

It is very easy to put on. The bar has a 'U' shaped opening that fits over the handles and the 2 sliders hold it in place. I don't think you would have any problems. Quite effortless, simple and effective.
