Very smooth, quality drawing pencils, pocket size!
I'm sooo impressed about this oil pencil drawing set! Firts, it have two Nero's: soft and extra soft. They're very dark oil charcoal pencils! and the sepia dark, light, and sanguine oil pencils add a beautiful and interesting tones! I have to said, that the Nero's pencils are darker than the Faber-Castell Pitt matte graphite pencils. I know!, I can't compare graphite with charcoal! but, in the darkness tones, Creta Nero win in this category! Nero are soft, blendable, erasable, and they're good to make gradients. I'm so excited about this, that I had to buy a set of Nero's because they can mixing with a regular graphite and charcoal, and this is a huge advantage for Drawing Artist!Note: try a smooth paper for drawing like bristol vellum smooth surface or any smooth surface you have, not printer paper.

Unique, high quality, soft, oily pencils!
I love these oil pencils! I collect and use all kinds of art pencils, and I find these to be rather unique. I wish Cretacolor would expand the range! I can't think of any others that are exactly like these. Lyra Rembrandt makes a collection of 12 "Art Specials," most of which are charcoal/chalk type pencils, but one of the pencils in that set, labeled "Rötelkreide 300" is an oil pencil very similar to these. (It is also my favorite in the set!) Other than that, I'd say the Derwent Drawing pencils are the most similar, but the texture is definitely not the same. They aren't quite as oily as these, and they seem to have a more clay-like feel. (I absolutely love those as well, for the record!)One thing I wondered when ordering these pencils was whether they would just be brown, black, and white versions of oil-based colored pencils, like Lyra Polycolor, Faber-Castell Polychromos, or Caran D'Ache Pablo. The answer is no! These are softer and oilier than all of the above and would more easily lend themselves to quick sketches. These could be used for careful, detailed drawing, too. They are very versatile, at least within the constraints of the limited palette. These pencils come sharpened with a very short point. I prefer a long point, and so far these pencils have tolerated that very well. (Some very soft pencils break when sharpened to a long point.)Thank you, Cretacolor! Please make more colors!

Wonderful for sketching & drawing
These are perfect especially for someone who likes to draw with traditional Sanguine & Sepia pencils without the chalky mess. Wonderful for sketchbooks & travel journals these smudge way less than pastels, charcoal or graphite & look lovely on white, cream or tinted papers. The pencils are smooth, water resistant & despite the name do not feel too oily or waxy. Colors layer well, blacks are nice & dark without the shine that graphite produces or the mess of charcoals. I can't recommend them enough!

Very good pencils
These are a little on the pricey side which is too bad because people who are just starting their artistic journey should have an opportunity to use these pencils. I have been teaching my grandchildren to draw with several mediums as well as paint. They have been experimenting with these pencils vs their graphite, charcoal and mixed pencils. It is good for them to try them all. I think they learn more that way. We all have liked drawing with the Cretacolor pencils.

CretaColor oil pencil set
I wasn’t exactly sure what these were, but I knew I wanted to try them. They are smoother than regular charcoal pencils but not as smooth as a Derwent or PrismaColor coloring pencil. They fall somewhere in between. In my quick test project (just a first pass), I used the white, sanguine and Nero extra soft pencils, no blending yet, on tan paper.

Damaged inside package
The case that holds the pencils was damaged and so was the plastic insert the pencils are in. I have not tried drawing yet.

Oily colored charcoal
They layer with waxy pencils and respond to mineral spirits.I did a portrait sketch with these. It was one of my best. The colors are a minimalist selection that can cover a wide range of portraits. And I love how much control these pencils give. This is one of my favorite sets now.

Win for me
My first oil pencil set. I have a Eberhard Faber Ebony and a Conte a Paris Carbone and Pierre Noir to compare. Not a fan of soft pastel leads or scratchy charcoal. Just my taste and needs. The Carbone would be my favorite, but the wood is of varying degrees of density. The ebony is great but something about the lead leaves something to be desired at times. These pencils have superior leads and wood, making them easy to sharpen. Sturdy and easy to grip. Love the oil pencils for their soft gliding feels, color, and versatility. Build up for drama. Shading them with a wet brush is fun also.Lighter marks erase pretty well with a plastic. A win.
