Sludge is a build-up of biological waste from fish, plants and other pond debris. It can result in very poor water conditions which affect the various aquatic life. It didn't do much to the blanket weed but it certainly cleared the water and I can see the bottom of the pond which is about 3'6" deep. Since then I have dropped in 4 sachets now and then but I am using Green Go for the blanket weed. All is working well so I suggest you just follow the instructions. **Q: do you have to turn off the uv light when using this or leave it on** A: The uv light was on all the time **Q: Is the pond life save when using this** A: Yes all pond life, fish, plants,frogs,dragonfly s etc are very safe **Q: My pond only holds 25 gallons so how much should I use** A: Not a lot. A calculation would give about 1/40 of a sachetbut if it were me I'd probably drop in 1/2 of a sachet.
