Crime thriller starring Robert De Niro and Al Pacino as a pair of long-time New York City police detectives assigned to investigate the vigilante murder of a notorious pimp, a case which appears to have links to a murder they worked on many years before. Is it possible that a serial killer is on the loose, and that their original investigation put the wrong man behind bars? John Leguizamo and Donnie Wahlberg co-star.

In retrospect, not so rubbish
There was so much excitement about RIGHTEOUS KILL in 2008 that it was almost certainly doomed. The idea of Pacino and De Niro spending serious time on screen together in serial killer cop movie was just too delicious. How could it possibly live up to expectations?Predictably, it got panned and put the kibosh on them doing anything together of its ilk again. Which is a shame, cos itβs actually not so awful. In fact, it was pretty damn good. The main flaw is that both actors are just so aged for the roles theyβre playing. Theyβre supposed to be old-skool cops β the NYPD equivalent of Regan and Carter. They needed to be ten years younger to make sense of the characters; the wily old dawgs, snarling at the young bloods at the precinct, fighting tooth and claw to avoid retirement. One of them has a steamy relationship with a youthful forensic investigator β pivotal to the plot β which only Bernie Ecclestone could equal.Apart from the age issue, the script is savvy, the filming is convincing, the violence is punchy and the zigzag plot had us fully engaged and shouting possible outcomes at the screen all through. Pacino gets all the wiseguy dialogue. De Niro has to deliver a difficult performance, which feels kinda blunt under you understand whatβs going on underneath.Totally decent Saturday night movie, in fact.8/10

Must-watch
Having read the bad reviews for this movie, I wasn't expecting much. But it was quite brilliant. Much better than I expected, and the Mafia duo do a brilliant job. De Niro is absolutely amazing as the old-school tough guy cop, while Al Pacino is a bit lazier with his acting, showing his age a bit more (he's 69), but still good. The movie is extremely exciting and is not boring for one second. A great cast, including 50 cent, who does his drug dealer role quite well (although not as scary as i had hoped...more of a wimp really). The story is very good, extremely watchable, clever, and coherent. The twist at the end is also very good.I've seen the slew of reviews saying how bad it was; I can tell you that those reviews are utter rubbish and just proves how little reviewers in this country know about movies. Apparently all these reviewers guessed the ending from 20mins in. Maybe they were all psychic, maybe I'm just dumb, or maybe...they all read a bad review somewhere online and decided to copy it. These reviewers have the mentality of 5 yr olds who want to throw away anything that's not new. This has been done before, that's been done before, so the movie must be rubbish. How many possible scenarios can you come up with? It's a modern, fast paced thriller. It can't compare with Heat (as all these reviewers mention a thousand times), but Heat is a different kind of movie, with different roles for the characters. Heat is not a classic mystery thriller; Righteous Kill is, and one of the best in this category.Considering De Niro and Pacino are nearing 70, this is an absolutely brilliant movie. FAR better than any of the movies Eastwood has starred in since 2000 pretty much (and I'm a big Eastwood fan).

The impression is that Alpacino and Robert Denero need to be modern. They don't.
Alot of different feelings this film evokes. I like the sudden twist at the end but not sure I like that Al Pacino is the lunatic murderer. The murderer is cop is believable. Recently in the Police force, there's some highlight and reccommendation to look after the mental health of officers all the way to the top of the forces. It's a modern film with 2 actors from many other films in the past. I prefer the older films and with them in it. I am not so sure if they can feel the characters they were supposed to be. I didn't think that I captured Robert Denero jumping on his much younger work colleague for sex. Jumping, in her home, work colleague and too young.

Director makes an unholy mess of Righteous Kill
Apart from the cast, there's really very little to separate this from a whole slew of straight to DVD thrillers. Which makes it all the more a mystery why DeNiro and Pacino chose this as their next vehicle to star in together, having created such screen heat in.. well, Heat.DeNiro and Pacino are both cops, both veterans (well, they'd have to be wouldn't they...) who end up investigating a vigilante serial killer. As the clues start to appear, suspicion grows that the killer is in fact a cop.. so who can be trusted, and just who is telling the truth...?Well, that's the set up, but it's great potential is somehow fumbled. The tag line of `the two best actors alive at the top of their game' is certainly somewhat overstated, but the fault does not lie there - rather it is in a weak story directed in such a straight forward way that red herrings are just rather too obvious. It's really not that bad, and has its own stylistic flourishings along the way - however it is also not half as clever as it seems to think it is, and the ending is unlikely to surprise anyone. Fortunately it is only 97 minutes so does not overstay its welcome too long.. certainly bearable for an undemanding watch, but when you factor in the disappointment factor of having two such great stars so sorely underused, this would come down a notch to a two star movie...
