Greed, barbarism, and cruelty.
This is a very interesting explanation of the Pueblo revolt in 1680 and the factors that led to it, as well as what happened afterwards when the Spanish returned. This is not generally known or taught in American schools. It is a part of the history of the United States even though it was not a part of the U.S. at that time. A knowledge of this history would lead to a more enlightened view of the conditions in the Southwest at the present time. It would also contribute to more understanding of the Indians of this region and what they have been subjected to in the past and up to the present time.

Well written for a white guy.
So far so good. I live in New Mexico and among the various Pueblos - so far it has really brought the landscape to life. Lol - I put the title the way I did because this book is the work of an outsider. A neutral third party at best, or a biased scholar looking for his own form of confirmation bias at worst. It would be nice to get a Puebloan version of this story - but as the book explains those on the side of the Natives are reluctant to speak to outsiders.

Light on a vague part history
I like that it was a new part of history for me. You hear a lot around the plains Indians people because that was apart of the American West history yet, this period was before the American history. I think it would mostly be appreciated by persons into history.

Great Source of Information
This is an excellent source of information for any who want to understand the one time when the Native Americans were able to drive out the invaders that made their life difficult. We have found it useful because we are tour guides for a park where some of those natives have spent time. Definitely recommend this book.

For New Mexico History, this is great
I live in New Mexico and this book brings to life the history of this region, a history that is overflowing with controversy, greed, and deceit. Roberts travels to many historic and pre-historic sites, some of which are quite remote, and describes what it is like today as well as what took place there centuries before. This book, along with Blood and Thunder, provide a realistic portrayal of the history of New Mexico and surrounding areas.Pueblo Revolt is one I've read again and again. A real keeper.

Paternalistic, Patronizing, and Scant on Detail
Paternalistic, Patronizing, and Scant on Detail. If a tribe doesn't welcome the author with open arms he labels them as xenophobic. Any archaeologist, anthropologist, or historian of Pueblo descent, the author questions their ability to tell the history with honesty and candor. Yet, the author relies almost exclusively on Spanish, historical records, takes Anglo archaeologists and historians at their word often without question, and patronizingly writes as though he knows what's best for how the Pueblo people's histories, sacred sites, and self-determination ought to be handled.Half the book is how the author can't get access to Pueblo stories, sites, or documents or is simply about how none exist. If you enjoy reading about failed research, then enjoy, but if you came for a balanced narrative or detailed history of the Pueblo Revolt, you won't find it here.At some point you would think the author would have realized there just wasn't enough here to fill a book. Incredibly disappointing read.

Superb author
An excellent account of a part of history of the Southwest. I prefer his mountaineering books.

the TEWA revolt.
I was totally Amazed that we have not heard of this in School. we were told about Custer and his battle with the INDIANS. BUT NOT ABOUT THE PUEBLOS, WHY? this was one of the Greatest Events in History & it has been Buried among other great Events. Our School system suffers greatly because our children are kept out of learning these Great Events. this should be required reading for all.

Muy flojo y con muchos prejuicios anti-españoles
Libro de Historia sin una sola nota. Muy flojo y anti-español. Le pondría un cero

Maniqueo y poco objetivo
Aunque los españoles conquistaron el territorio y cometieron algunas atrocidades, el libro me parece maniqueo y poco objetivo.
