Great Practical Pen
This is my third pen from Taylor Brands,[...] (yes they are the maker of Schrade and Smith & Wesson, and yes they are imported) But that doesnt take anything away from the pen! I was hesitant about the pull cap, but it takes one heck of a pull to remove the cap and a good push to put it back on. One reviewer is afraid after time that this might get weak and quit functioning. Looking closer at it I think the retention is made of Teflon and not Plastic? For the Money if it last a couple of years I will be happy with it! I have big hands and I have no issue using this pen for normal everyday writing, I am changing out the parker equivilent refill for a Broad tip because I never like fine tip pens. The refill in it thought works just fine. Now as a defense tool, it is obviously a last resort item of defense, but women are taught to use their car keys, there shouldnt be a reason why you cant pull this pen out and stab someone pretty quickly, I know I wouldnt want to be surprised with a pen sticking out of my chest or throat. Pros: Very sturdy pen, good writing, sturdy clip, and a defensive last ditch if needed. Cons: Why put SMITH & WESSON on the clip so everyone can see what the heck it is, and TSA can take it away! Black sharpie covered now. Dont know how long pulling the cap off and on will loosen over time? Why cant we get this stuff made in America and not in Taiwan!

High-quality tactical pen at reasonable price.
This tactical pen is extremely sturdy and has a nice solid weight and construction that makes it an effective self-defense weapon. I've used this in tandem with breaking judo holds and some other judo techniques/self-defense scenario enactments in general and I would definitely recommend this specific pen for it's quality. As a weapon this pen is a very good length and weight, and just feels very strong. The pen as a writing tool is also pretty effective and not very conspicuous, as long as the cap is on the sharp non-pen end. (It should be noted that when the cap is off the pen, the pen is pretty much symmetrical and a little less effective to use as a weapon because it feels shortened and the sharp end can't be comfortably braced against the thumb). Technically, it's a bit difficult to take the pen cap on and off. That's pretty much my only complaint. But that's fine because I rarely use this as a pen in the first place. Other notes about the pen's construction... it's easy to unscrew the pen for changing the ink, and the clip on the pen cap is strong and seems to be made of the same material as the rest of the pen. Altogether this is just a very good product that is made well and straightforward to use.

Great defense tool, that is functional everyday
I worked in law enforcement and executive protection for many years, and I believe everyone should have a way to defend themselves in case of an unexpected attack. I am able to remove the pen from my pocket and have it in a defense hold quicker than I could draw my weapon. This item is great because it's less lethal, and is very capable to ward of an attack with out (probably) causing great bodily harm. I keep this along with a knife, and would use this way before I took it to the next level. The tactical pen is very sturdy. The cap stays on if you were to have to use it in a self defense situation. The cap is also too hard to pull off, but after using it many times, it has loosened up a little. The writing quality is also great, making this an excellent tool to carry with you daily. Be safe!!!

A thoughtful update over the previous model.
I have both this model and the SWPENBK. This one has the benefit of a pop off cap that pops on to the other end for writing, which is a major improvement over the screw off/leave off design of the earlier model. The cap is held very tightly, so can be a struggle to remove, but this may improve over time. (I'd rather have it tight than too loose.) Without the cap, the pen body is slightly shorter than the other model despite it being half a inch longer capped, the defensive tip isn't quite as sharp, and the position of the clip rides it about 1/4" higher in the pocket. It also lacks the overall taper and longitudinal grooves in favor of a checkered band for positive grip. Both models have pretty durable finishes, write very smoothly, and have a good feel and weight in the hand. So tactical features aside (and yes, you could probably inflict very nasty discouraging wounds with either model if needs must), you still have a very cool pen that writes well.

Good overall but one niggling detail
This is my first tactical pen (S&W Military & Police) and now that I've had it a week I've got some thoughts both pro and con: PRO: Solidly constructed; fit and finish excellent. Well balanced. Comfortable to write with. Size is just right, at least with the cap in place. I saw one review with the opinion it was 1/2"too short, but in my opinion if it were much longer it would not fit in typical shirt pockets. The point would deliver a very painful jab even though it's not "sharp." It makes a nice intermediate stage between pulling a tactical knife and the use of pepper spray, both of which I also carry. CON: A lanyard loop on a pen is not only useless but looks odd. I'd have rather they made the upper 1/2" of the cap solid. I may fill it with some 1/8" stainless steel. Now for my pet peeve with this item: The words "Smith & Wesson" are prominently embossed on the clip which will show when carried in a shirt pocket. Since tactical pens are supposed to be unobtrusive, a stealth self-defense tool you can take into places that wouldn't allow more obvious weapons, I find it rather mind-boggling that S&W decided to print something that even non-gun people would immediately connect with weapons. Sorry, Smith & Wesson, you blew it on this little detail. If you are a soldier, cop, or security officer this might escape notice but it would be immediately noticed if a "civilian" had it. Suffice it to say I would NEVER try to take this pen past a security checkpoint; it would probably be confiscated immediately or (if you're lucky) prohibited. Take a mini-mag type flashlight instead. I may remove the paint from the clip and just leave it as bare metal.

Super heavy and durable pen! Superb quality!
Beyond impressed by the high quality of this pen. It feels so heavy and thick in my hand. I work in a hospital emergency department and frequently lend my pen out to patients and colleagues, and I’m always getting compliments on this pen.

2 in a row absolutely useless. Poor quality control.
First one was great, 2 years later bought another one. Completely useless as the screw end that hides the pen will not come off even using tools. Sent it back. Got the replacement, same thing. Again I already have one that does work and am familiar with how it's made and assembled. Poor quality control and 2x in a row being useless has me never buying from S and W again. As a comparison, I bought a Black Fly pen and it's just as well built but unlike this one, it actually works.

Absolute WIN for college students.
Just got this in today and let me tell you it was worth every dollar. Absolutely superb writing utensil. What more could you want? Impossible to break and will defend you in your time of need, especially if you are a full time student like myself and can't carry a firearm onto campus. (college BTW) Here in Texas there has been a rash of parking lot assaults and thefts and even rapes. School says you can't have a knife or firearm to protect yourself? Fine. Get one of these. With the proper application of force to certain anatomical portions of the body, it will take the rape out of anybody. Plus I must say it looks rather sharp in my opinion. The only thing I didn't like about it was the ink cartridge that shipped with it. I'm sorta a pen snob and my favorite pen cartridges are the TUL needle pts in .5. However the the TUL is a bit too long so a little knife work to take off about a 1/3 inch of plastic, lighter to smooth it out and sandpaper to finish and voila! got my favorite ink cartridge in my favorite pen. Highly recommend. Just can't beat it.
