I wear it under a welding helmet. Stops the cherries from popping into your ear canals. It's thin and doesn't affect hats, helmets, eye protection that you might wear over it. I can even wear a 3M respirator protector over it without compromising the respirator. The face opening is plenty variable so that you could leave your entire face exposed or close it down to just your eyes. Long enough neck that it tucks down under or over a T shirt so that there's no skin exposed to burn from the weld flash or the flying hot molten metal. In MY application, it's there to keep heat OFF of me. It would probably work to keep heat IN the wearer as well, if that were your intended application. Simply put, it's thin, fits my huge head, it's comfortable, it doesn't interfere with anything else I wear on top of it or under it.

I haven't tried to see how fire proof it is because all I wanted to do was avoid sun and wind burn, and it works great.

I used it for cold weather with wind chill feeling like -10 Celsius, but this Balaclava wasn't warm enough. It still fits nicely and looks exactly as shown, so I'd recommend it for weather that's not cold.

I ordered this Balaclava (Coyote) together with a blackhawk 3/4 zip grid fleece Pullover (Coyote). Booth products have a good quality, BUT... the Colour "Coyote" ist not the same. The Pullover in Coyote is much darker than the Balaclava. So, that is why i can give just 4 Stars.
