When making a salad, I place the bowl on the scale, tare it, add lettuce and record the value, tare, add tomato, record, tare, add broccoli, etc. I later enter all values into a custom Excel spreadsheet and determine my exact calories, fat, carbs, protein, and other nutrients for the day. It was very revealing as I found most of my calories were coming from the Olive Oil dressing and the Red Wine I was drinking with the meal.
