I wish that the underlying theme didn’t focus on alopecia as a negative condition to have. My daughter is in 5th grade and she has alopecia universalis. We are constantly reinforcing that hair does not define you, nor do you need it. She is proud and confidently walks around bald every day of her life. So lines that say, “it doesn’t fill me with glee” or talking about wigs as an “option to feel girly” are not reinforcing that confidence.It also asks the little girl in the story about how she will stop people who “say nasty things”, basically implying that it is a given that it will happen. My daughter is the one who pointed that out, asking why it’s in there. I realize how detrimental getting alopecia can be to a persons self esteem, and mental health. This may just reflect the authors experience, but that doesn’t have to be the case.I really am not trying to pick this book apart. There needs to be more alopecia childrens books! It is a wonderful book with great intentions. It is just that subtle messaging can influence the children reading it. The author creatively shares the experience of hair loss and how it feels, along with the bond of friendship that is so helpful when struggling with looking different. The rhythm of the writing is a lot of fun when reading aloud.
