Can the spotlight be turned on on demand?

You cannot turn it on via the phone app. I sent mine back because I could not do this.

Can you use wifi for phone alerts only or is using a simplisafe base required?

If you're asking if you can use these without the Simplisafe base station, its required to setup the cameras. It won't work without it.

When viewing from the app how long does it take the video to pop up?

We have been trying to get our outdoor cameras to work properly for two months. The delay is sometimes good, (although very rare,) and other times the delay is 15 to 30 seconds. And if it takes longer then 30 seconds, the camera’s fault out all together. Customer support has NOT been much suggest. We are gonna give it a few more days, then send them back.

What size is the usb to supply power if i don't want to rely on battery? don't feel like spending 50 dollars for their proprietary power cord.

It actually does work on a power supply (as you can see they offer an expensive solution on their site). I have 2 of these cameras both running on a 5v adapter I already owned and a 26ft micro USB purchased from Amazon, which only costed less than $15, and they work great! Saves a lot of money! You will notice there are rubber bumps inside the camera where the USB C connection is so it will seem it's not compatible because the charger won't go in (depending on the design of the cable input) but you can cut those rubber bumpers out without causing any damage to the camera itself and it will plug right in with no issue. I purchased my Simplisafe cameras from Best Buy.
