Is this cable bi-directional? Does one specific side have to be plugged into the tv etc?

The cable is not bi-directional, in that it neither sends a signal in both directions, nor does it connect that way. You can tell by the difference in the connectors on each end. The side that would plug into the TV would be the silver end, but this is an extender, which likely means you'll have to have the same silver connector on the other end of a plug to plug into whatever other device you want that TV connected to. This extender simply takes a cable such as the one I'm speaking of and giving it extra length, hence having one connector be just a hole to plug the silver end into.
