KEEN Austin Shoes

These are decent shoes, they are pretty durable, I have an old pair I use for mountain biking and have had to glue the sole back on a few times but they aren't really made for hiking and mountain biking. You probably will have to glue the sole a few time because it will come apart after some wear. I still love this shoe though, If they had a one piece sole they would even be better. Lots of room in the fore foot area if you like that. I still give them a 5 because they are better than those foam soled shoes that are only comfortable for a short time, comfort is good with these for a long time. My old ones are still comfortable and I've had them for about 5 years with lots of hard wear, hiking biking walking and even working some in the yard. They are made of full grain leather so are durable, the sole will wear through after lots of wear but nothing lasts forever in this world. That's why I give them a 5 because I've already had a pair of them before.

I bought a pair of keen shoes many years ago and I was really satisfied with the comfort and quality, they lasted a long time. My only complaint was that they were a little heavy. Recently I had the need to buy a pair of comfortable walking shoes and began researching my options and reading reviews of the few that I liked. I decided to buy the Keen Austin, and I just got them yesterday. My first impressions are very positive overall. True to the size, I’m a 10 and sometimes depending on the brand I have to buy an extra 1/2 size up, but not in this case. The last pair of sneakers I bought were the adidas Terrex Swift R2 GTX, and even though I bought a 10 1/2, they were still a little narrow for my feet. The Keen Austin feel wide enough, but firm. I read in some of the reviews that the shoes take a little long to break them in. After walking a few hours with them I would agree with that. They are comfortable, but they are not soft (yet). Today I’m hitting the parks in Orlando, so I’ll be able to provide a more accurate information about them later. The temperature today was 46° F and they felt comfortably warm. So far so good. Update: The same day I got my shoes, after wearing them for a few hours, I decided to return them and get them in 1/2 size bigger. My toes were touching and rubbing against the front, and the width of the left shoe was too narrow. I’ve been wearing the 10 1/2 now for 2 days and they fit perfectly. I’m still in the process of breaking them in. But as far as comfort I still give them 5 stars.

I purchased these from Amazon after trying on a different Keen in a retail store, I figured that Keen would be across the board with sizing. These aren't available where I live. I ordered a 12 and they were a half a size to large. I sent them back and exchanged them for 11 1/2. I received these and they fit perfect. The box toe is something to get used to, I am coming from Merrell's and never owned Keen. Here was the big issue. I have never had an issue with Amazon like this, maybe this was a fluke. The right shoe looked like it had been worn and something splashed all over the shoe and it stained. I tried to wipe clean with a wet rag, no go. It was very noticeable. I called Amazon already having a Prime account, I requested these be 1 day shipped for this mistake. The rep placed me on hold for a few minutes then came back and said she will email me the results. I advised her that if it can't be 1 day, just refund. SO, in a few minutes I received an email saying they refunded me. I think this is pretty sorry on Amazon's part. Blessing anyway, the chocolate color was available on another site for 79.95, a full 30.00 dollars cheaper than Amazon. Bottom line, watch for used products to be shipped. I read feedback when I was shopping for buzzers recently, customers were receiving used buzzers. This order of mine was fulfilled by Amazon, someone didn't check both shoes prior to re-shipping them out from another return. And you may want to do a quick web search before buying. You may find a blessing of your own. What little time I had the shoe on, it seems comfortable. I can tell there is some breaking in to do, I would hope they break quick. The box toe is roomy, but not too much just make sure you get the correct foot length fit. They seem like they will be rather comfy. Another plus is the footbed is removable and not cloth. I have found non-cloth insoles wear longer, and fend off odor causing bacteria better.

I'm 6'4", 225 pounds, and have an active lifestyle, skateboarding and biking on platform pedals. My shoes are not going to have an easy life, but my demands seem like reasonable, common expectations. It's surprisingly hard meeting these demands no matter the budget: Durable. Stiff flex. Human foot wide. Good or replaceable inserts. Resilient foot bed core materials. Comfortable and stylish. Not prone to stink. My solution to this problem for decades has been the original Keen Bronx. My first pair were my exclusive daily drivers for a couple years before I had to consider replacing them. I've tried several unsatisfactory Keens over the years. Maybe 20 years ago when they replaced the Bronx with the Bronx II, (identifiable by arched eyestay and a different sole that was nowhere near as durable) I bought and hoarded original Bronx from eBay for over a decade. That well is dry and my last pair of original Bronx are ready for the trash. These Austins are my newest hope for a Bronx replacement. Before ordering I tried canvas Austins on at a local retailer and was surprised I needed to go down .5 from my usual Keen 12 (46). Keen nails the Austin fit and comfort, with the exception of the insert, which seems like it was designed by Keens accounting department, then went through marketing, before going to manufacturing. Too thin and floppy to offer any real support or much cushion. I pop in the older more supportive Keen inserts and we're in business. Toe box is uncramped. No weird pressure points. No normal pressure points like the Achilles and front tendons. Uppers feel a bit stiffer structurally than I expect from a canvas shoe, more like a boot, but 0 miles on these so expect they'll flex easier as they break in. Beneath the insole I see just what I like: A durable looking felt core stitched to the uppers. These should survive cycles soaking and drying in sweat, streams, or weather. The sole of the original Bronx was the same Keen still uses on the Newport Sandal, but tragically not on any shoes for some reason. None of the other Keens soles I've tried have been nearly as durable as the Newport, some wearing through to the spongy core after a couple months, then disintegrating rapidly. The sole of the Austin seems to be of quality construction, but I won't know for a few months. I like the Austin's fairly flat, unobtrusive tread for skating and biking, a willing sacrifice of traction on loose surfaces or wintery streets. The flex feels stiff and supportive, just as I prefer. Short of bringing the original Bronx back, Keen could just glue the Newport sole to the Austin upper, upgrade the inserts, and I'd have a winner. You listening Keen? I've bought a dozen pairs of your Bronx used at no profit to you, and countless other shoes, all money I'd gladly have given to Keen for new pairs of my old favorite. I'm hopeful I have a runner-up favorite shoe in the Austin.

Extremely stiff shoe reminds me of shoes I bought 40 years ago. Bought about 3 weeks ago and takes about 50 hours to break in; the shoe appears to be built to last and provides great support. I wear them 8-10 hours at a time. Wide toe box, a typical feature with Keen is roomy and allows for natural toe spread. They don't have the built-in cushion of a sneaker or pliable walking shoe and the removeable insole is flat and offers no arch support but that's the case with most shoes these days, easy to replace with an insole of your choice. Lack of a lug sole is a plus; I get tired of tracking mud and stones into the house. Overall, a great shoe, hope it holds up as well as anticipated.

I love Keen's for the wide toe box, but a lot of their models run too wide in the rest of the shoe, or they weigh 5 pounds each and it feels like you're trying to walk in concrete blocks. Not the Austin's though. They are the perfect size. They do take a couple days to break in, but once they do, they're like wearing nothing at all. They just hug your feet. Overall I would recommend Keen to most people and the Austin model to everyone.

September 2025 Update: These shoes never really broke in. They are still heavy, still stiff and just do not breathe well. I wear them once a week in rotation with my other Keen shoes and these are my least favorite. I will not buy another pair of these until I see (or hear) that they are made differently. How can a pair of shoes not break in after this length of time? It's a mystery. I've ordered my Keen Austin shoes 1 year and 6 months ago. I wear them around the office, and also at home (on occasion). Here are my observations: Sizing: Sizing is spot on. I like Keens because I have a high-volume foot. Keen shoes generally fit my feet very well and give my toes some room. Which is good because I have back issues and diabetic issues. Appearance: These look snazzy. I like the earthy colors and the leather looks rich. The sole looks great, too. Feel: Here is where the review starts to head south. The collar of the shoe feels uncomfortable (the padded ring around the ankle). The lining material inside of the shoe looks like leather but feels like plastic. The leather of the shoe feels very stiff. I've worn these 3x a week for 18 months and they still don't feel like they've "broken in". They also feel heavy. I have a previous version of this shoe (made in the USA), and it feels lighter and definitely feels broken in. This version, however, feels like a shoe you might buy while on vacation in another country at a market. You'd be thinking "Wow, a pair of Keen shoes for a cheap price! They must be knock-offs, but they look great!". Then you buy them, take them home and a month later you are telling yourself "Yeah, these don't feel like Keen shoes at all. They look like them, but they just don't have the Keen feel." Wear: These shoes wear like iron. The heavy leather (or whatever it is) for the uppers is tough and scratch resistant. Doesn't stretch at all, doesn't like to bend either. The lining of the shoe is likewise tough. It looks like leather, but really cheap plasticky leather. The sole is wearing very well, too. Overall: You know, they aren't the Keen shoes of years past. These feel like forty-dollar shoes, tops. They feel like a shoe you'd buy if you thought that Keen shoes were too expensive, but you liked the look. The only problem is these ARE Keen shoes. I give them three stars after 18 months.

The leather finishing isnt as expected as it looks as if it is robbed with dust or used even. For the first time to see size EU 49 equivalent to US17. It should be US14 or 14.5. Just a good offer i got it.

Un peu bec de canard, qui ne me dérange pas. Super confortables, bien finies, agréables à la marche...but recherché !!! Très satisfait de ces chaussures pour un premier essai après mes Timberland et mes Columbia.
