PLATINUM STANDARD for learning TCP/IP generic . This is the best of the best. Comer's books or others cannot come close to this
This is book is widely ignored. But being a veteran in this field, I can say for certain for general understanding of IP and TCP and above of OSI. NO one illustrates better than Charles. Yes I myself am an author too. So I know, and I understand what my studles like. When they read comer or others, they feel "Oh why do I need no know this"...But when they read this book "Awesome, tell me more, I want to further read RFC's, thanks" People buy Duglas, book. Sorry. Its not the good standard, his books for Network systems programming with C is kind ok a old gold standard., BUT the book that explains/guides/illustrates TCP/IP protocols in generic. Not the network sys level programming. But to be a good network systems programming person you still need this. to not have a faulty understanding of the protocol. or incomplete understanding. Very well explained, in detail. You will benefit a lot reading it. Contact the author for free samples if he does offer.

expensive
one damn thing for sure. its hell expensive. it may be good but costly. the content of the book is available on authors website free of cost. this may very well be reduced to something that can be affordable. i appreciate if its done

After being out of the loop with networking for sometime, I was able to sync up with most concepts in about an hour of reading this book. Very clear explanations and diagrams, I think the author is a genius because most networking books I read either ramble on or don't have proper diagrams. This book has both, to the point explanation with diagrams, that's all I need. If I remember correctly this book is available for free but after browsing through this on Google Books, I just felt compelled to pay the author for making my life so much easier :)

Would agree with many of the positive reviews here. It is hard to believe that just one person wrote this book. Equally amazing is how good it is. It is getting a bit old and some things are beginning to move on, but to understand IPv6, you need a good grasp of IPv4. Both are covered beautifully in a manner designed to teach not confuse or merely impress other academic types. There are detailed diagrams and line by line full explanations on every topic and nothing nor any detail is skipped. From binary transfer, to packet encoding, everything imaginable is covered for the OSI reference model, in terms that just about anyone can understand. Seriously impressive. Want to understand networking? Much of the information in this book is a must. As a reference book, it is outstanding. At 1500+ pages it doesn't miss much, if anything, although I must confess to only having read line by line about a third of it in total, roughly 500 pages. I'm biased as my hobby and professional work is IT. I literally have multiples of hundreds of tech books, in paper and Ebooks. For me, this book is a work of fine art.
