Sew a Beautiful Wedding

Dated, But Useful
This is a Palmer/Pletsch book, which means it's pretty helpful. P/P has a reputation for high-quality sewing books, and this one is no exception. It's a fairly small book, so it doesn't go in-depth on any of the topics---it just skims them, giving you the essentials. Some of the contents:Timeline and checklist for planning your wedding.Picking the best style of wedding gown.Choosing the most flattering waistline, neckline, sleeves, and veil.Fixing the most common fit issues.Choosing and sewing with delicate bridal fabrics.Sewing tips, pressing tips.A guide to types of laces, how to sew with lace.Hemming.Sewing different types of slips or petticoats.Tips on beading.Headpieces and veils. There's lots of really great information for the bride who wants to sew her own wedding dress, although if you have no sewing experience, you'll need a good book on sewing techniques, as well. The only downside is how dated this book is. It's from 1980, and the fashion sketches are classic examples from the late 1970s. So, when the book says, "You can go with an updated/contemporary style," and then it shows a long dress with a high collar, empire waist, and belled sleeves (a typical '70s "garden-style" wedding dress), it's laughable. But if you can overlook the dated illustrations, you'll find plenty of helpful information.Four stars and recommended to anyone who's thinking about sewing their wedding dress, or wants tips on working with formal fabrics and lace.

Confidence Builder
This book was quite helpful to me as I began making the wedding gown for my granddaughter, which is currently still in progress. I have made bridesmaids dresses before, but never the bride's dress, and I was somewhat nervous about cutting into the satin and lace fabrics without a clear understanding of how to proceed with the various aspects of the dress. This book gave detailed general instruction which helped build my confidence, and gave good constructive tips. I referred to it often as I made the dress. Even though the dress is not finished yet, so far it is without flaw and looking gorgeous, thanks in part to the invaluable information in the book, which I would not have known otherwise. The book does not give a lot of specific construction detail, since every bridal dress is different, but it gives enough general information to proceed with confidence, which is what I needed.

good reference.
I got this book to help me design and sew my daughter's wedding dress. She found a designer dress in a magazine and I found a vintage pattern to make her gown. I have just started the dress so, I have to see how it turns out. I have been sewing for years but, the type of material she picked was different so I need help. This book was a recommended book and was within my price range. I bought it and another about couture sewing. Book looks a lot different from the photo but so far has been very helpful. Most of the other recommended books are marked up to high on the site for me.

Helpful - with limits
As I am making my daughter's wedding gown, I bought this book. The first part, dealing with gown types, styles, and silhouettes, was of no value; we had already chosen a pattern. The section on customizing fit is very basic (I sew a lot and can do most of this), but if you are not experienced, it would be very helpful. The same is true of the fabric selection, sewing basics, and special bridal fabrics chapters. The laces and hems chapters included a good bit of information that I have never needed and was unfamiliar with. What made this most useful for me were the sections on underpinnings and veils. Instructions are clear and well-illustrated. All in all, if you sew a lot, you probably don't need this book, but if you are an average seamstress and nervous about the project, this would be a excellent book for you.

A good buy.
This book is relatively small. It is does not have color illustrations. Still- the drawn illustrations are clear and understandable. It gives good information about choosing dress shape, gives info on sewing techniques, fabric choice etc. It is a small wedding planner for someone who wants to make a wedding dress.I did not want to make a wedding dress, but was sewing a lace dress for my sister. I found this book gave me more then my moneys worth in information. I only payed a couple of dollars for it and I would definitely buy it again if I needed to and I would recommend it to others.

very helpful!
I like the way you get walked through the process. Having never made a wedding dress before, I find that I feel much more comfortable attempting one! It may be a bit dated, but the for the most part, the process should be the same! Glad I got it, very glad!

disappointed
When I ordered a used copy of, "Sew a Beautiful Wedding" By Gail Brown & Karen Dillon, I expected the 1995 edition as shown in the photo illustration and explained in the written desscription. Instead I received a used copy of the 1980 edition which is much less useful and very outdated. It was very cheap, essentially I only paid for shipping, so I guess I really can't complain. But it would be much better if used book listings are clearly marked as to publication date. I would have bought a higher priced used copy in order to get the newer version if I had known.

So-so sewing book
This is a small format book, with cheap paper. No use of colour. Illustrations, not photos. There is a whole section in the front about getting ready for your wedding, to-do lists, and so on. I didn’t think this was particularly relevant in a sewing book. I chiefly used this to cross-reference with the Singer book on sewing gowns, if I was looking for additional information about a technique. I did find the section on lace useful, but I am glad it wasn’t my only reference book.
