The Complete Guide To Chinese Medicine Bloodletting

I wish I had this book 14 years ago when I first started using blood letting with my patients. The treatments were effective but the tools like the dull Chinese three edged bleeding needles I started out with were terrible. They have been have been replaced by sharper hypodermic needles and the various lancets which I tried before have been mostly replaced by larger 17 gage McKessen lancets which I learned about on the Facebook group hosted by Dean Mouscher. Improvements in my tools have made it quick and easy to do wet cupping on the upper back and to do a much better job of bleeding in other areas. There are 3 acupuncturists working in our clinic and we have gone crazy with everything we have learned from Dean’s Facebook group. Even better is the changes which we have seen in our most difficult patients when we use these techniques. And now we have Dean’s new book. This clinical guide contains everything which I have slowly and painfully (for my patients) learned over the years and much more. Everything one needs to know about blood letting is laid out clearly and concisely: how to treat specific conditions, the proper procedures for specific areas of the body, where to get supplies, how to dispose of waste, the conditions which respond the best to blood letting, and even how to talk about this difficult subject with your patients. It is as perfect for practitioners who are new to blood letting and as it is old hands who would like to learn new tricks. If you are an acupuncturist who likes to see sudden and dramatic improvements in patients who do not responded well to your usual treatment protocols this book will give you a powerful new edge to work with. The photos, illustrations, and organization of the book make it easy to quickly find the protocol you need for each client. This is the kind of book that doesn’t end up on sitting on a shelf. It will sit on your desk filled with notes and bookmarks and be used day in and day out until it falls apart.

This book is a wonderful contribution to bloodletting, but really to Chinese Medicine as a whole. Dean manages a facebook group dedicated to the Chinese Medical modality of bloodletting, and for many has become the Western authority on the subject. Dean’s book contains very clear and concise information on why and when to use bloodletting, as well as how to do it effectively for a wide variety of different conditions. His writing is candid and based on his own extensive clinical experience, and there are many gems throughout that can be used immediately and with great results. This book is very practical, useful, and will pay dividends in terms of clinical results immediately and many times over. It complements Henry McCann’s book (Pricking the Vessels) - which contains more of the history, theory, and scholarly background for bloodletting - very nicely, and these are two books I turn to and recommend to all my students.

I, like many others, learned bloodletting in Chinese medicine school. And I have been using it in my practice almost since the beginning. What this book and Dean's FB site have done is make this technique so much more clear and simple. From location of back points for wet cupping using spring loaded lancets to switching from dull and painful 3-edged needles we learned about in school to sharper and almost painless hypodermic needles, this book is instantly practical. I now look for visible signs of blood stasis and incorporate that into my work day, every day. The speed and stamina of recovery among appropriate patients is remarkable vs. using acupuncture as a stand alone. We are fortunate that Dean took the time to organize this material into such a clinically relevant book. I do hope all TCM schools will incorporate this into their programs.

A more practical guide to blood letting for the practitioner of Chinese medicine could not have been written. This book covers everything one needs to know, from indications for the procedure, to tools & supplies, safety, technique, and so on. It is written in an easy style, with good illustrations. As an experienced acupuncturist but newcomer to the practice of bloodletting, I can honestly say that incorporating this technique into my practice has been a game-changer, and the author has made it easy to learn.

This book cuts out all the fat and gets right to the point. This is a great clinical reference and the only book of its kind to my knowledge.

A must have book for anyone interested to learn the art and science of blood letting in Chinese medicine. This book is based not only on academic research, but also on personal clinical practice. Very easy to read, and apply instructions. There is also information on where and what supplies are necessary to conduct safe and easy blood letting. In addition, Dean has a wonderful group for clinicians, where nuances of blood letting are discussed, and you can personally ask a question to the author. I just wanted to add re-introduction of blood letting into acupuncture practice is a quiet revolution.

The book is very detailed, it covers all the must know knowledge for you, in a simple and easy to understand manner.

Great book with lists of clinical applicability... Maybe next edition can be in color and have some quotes from the Neijing (including Chinese characters).

Great book. Really clearly written - as Dean Mouscher says at the start of the book, this is the practical clinical advice he wished he had when he embarked on the bloodletting journey. And he actively teaches online to acupuncturists - very generous and current.
