Review: Great for the archive! - I dabble here and there in content creation and I found my hard drive would fill up very quickly when encoding videos at a high quality. I have found this product to be a great way to solve the problem I was having. I've now used this drive for almost a year and it has been nothing but consistent. Files load fast (not SSD speeds but that's to be expected) and transferring large quantities of files between drives has been quick and painless. For gaming, this drive is adequate but you wont find the blistering speed you'd expect with M.2 NVMe drives. I would recommend this drive for storage more than anything else, but that doesn't mean that there is no versatility to this HDD. It's a great quality product, quick to setup, and I've observed no drive errors in the time I've owned it. If anyone gets this drive, installs it, and can't see it in your list of available storage, make sure you format and mount it using Disk Management on Windows devices.

## Questions & Answers

**Q: Is this 7200 or 5400rpm?**
A: Only the 1 TB (#ST1000DM010)  and 2 TB (#ST2000DM008) models are 7200, all the larger models are 5400.  Both the llisted speed and model number change in the product description as you pick different disk size options.  

This is consistent with Seagate's website -- From the home page, drill down through (or search for) Internal / Hard Drives / BarraCuda - Learn More, and then click the 3.5 inch models tab (NOT the 3.5 inch PRO models tab).  Then click on the data sheet next to any model to get a PDF with a table containing all of the models along with their drive speeds and other specs..

**Q: Is a sata cable included in the package?**
A: Cables not included.  You can buy a SATA data cable and likely the appropriate power cable for your computer right here on Amazon.  Depending on your power supply, the power cable may already be connected to it in your computer -- some have that and some do not.

**Q: Is this really 7200rpm? the model number suggests otherwise.**
A: Only the 1TB and 2TB HDDs in this series are 7200RPM.  The higher capacity drives are 5400RPM and only intended as data drives.

When using the 5400RPM drives you should have a separate drive that is either a 7200RPM HDD, a NVMe drive or an SSD for the operating system/as the boot drive.  5400RPM drives will boot a computer but will be noticeably slower than a 7200RPM HDD, a NVMe drive or an SSD.  If your computer is new enough, an NVMe drive would be the best option.  Otherwise, a SATA SSD would be the next best option.  All three are available right here on Amazon.

**Q: Is the 2tb (st2000dm008) internal hard drive cmr or smr?**
A: I can't speak to SMR vs. CMR but since I see someone said this is unsuitable as a boot drive I will note that I have used this as the boot drive with a dual Windows 10-Xubuntu 20.04 OS install and it has worked fine.  I personally think the load/unload cycle count is set way too liberally, it unloads way too quickly IMO but that is easy enough to deal with and even if it isn't dealt with the drive has about 3-5 years of load/unload cycles built into it and that is worst case where the computer is on constantly (my use case).  Of course if you use it as a data only drive and use an SSD or M.2 for a boot drive this is a moot point as the drive is not accessed regularly.

### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Quality, reasonably priced mechanical HDD

A typically good quality, affordable mechanical HDD from Seagate. Since one of my old small internal HDDs decided to wave the white flag after 14 years of use & 3 different PC builds (I can't complain), and currently being 'of limited means' I needed a reliable, well-priced replacement -preferably significantly larger & faster. This 2Tb Seagate model fit the bill perfectly; a standard, well-understood and engineered drive that is bought and used by many people for good reason. The spec. on these BarraCuda drives is good -not spectacular / 'high-end', but it isn't supposed to be: they're designed to provide people with a decent-capacity, solidly specified mechanical HDD at an affordable price, and have built a formidable reputation as exactly that. Supplied in the usual box and anti-static wrapping, the BarraCuda gives a good impression, nicely built, with a natty green label. Installation is exactly as you would hope / expect and as plug & play as any internal drive can be: fix into appropriate bay, plug in leads, and, as relevant, get your OS to assign a drive letter, format & off you go. In use, I've found it quiet, with good access time and no sign thus far of any reliability issues -exactly as you would hope. Since my ancient desktop (almost a decade old now) has another very elderly HDD installed which I use purely for storage, I'll be buying another of these BarraCudas in the next couple of months as a preemptive measure and capacity / speed upgrade. Does exactly what it's supposed to do / says on the tin: a good HDD at a decent price. Recommended.
