The Gravediggers' Bread: 19 (Pushkin Vertigo)

Encore Dard!
It's frustrating that Dard wrote so many novels, but only a handful are available in English. This excellent, short novel felt like Simenon meets Camus - it's a crime novel, but a cut above its competitors, with a haunting atmosphere and a great sense of place. My only complaint is that it was all over too quickly, as I didn't want it to stop. Dard is my new favourite crime novelist and will appeal to anyone who likes Patricia Highsmith. I only hope that more translations are in the pipeline.

Just remember it was written in the 50s
Another welcome and enjoyable quick-to-read noir from Pushkin Vertigo. Not the best Dard I have read and some of the misogynistic behaviour of the two main male characters toward the wife/lover might sour some readers' enjoyment. Just remember when it was written. Tres bon.
