Want to challenge your student in a fun, inexpensive way? Get. This. Book.
My godson loved his Christmas present. He loves that the pen tells him when he's wrong and he loves when it turns Green! He's getting quicker with his subtraction and addition facts and his reading skills have improved. He's challenged consistently. Can't wait to buy the next grade level.

Outstanding! But not at grade level.
My daughter is nearly done with first grade, and she's behind in math. She can do just about all of book I and much of book II, and she only just started with the books today. I estimate her class was at this level at about mid-fall of grade 1.For my daughter, these are GREAT. The talking pen is building her confidence, and it has the extremely strong added value of taking me out of the practice time so it doesn't devolve into a battle. Also, she isn't trying random answers, because she doesn't want to hear the (extremely gentle) negative feedback. I will have to stay nearby, so that she doesn't skip subtraction. The pen rotates through a set of positive and negative responses, to reduce boredom, and lights up with red or green. I've also got an Ace pen (the dog one) to alternate once she gets bored with this one.

From not focusing on school to begging to do school!
Absolutely love these! My son was having the hardest time focusing and was interested in everything but school till I ordered these and made it into a competition. For every problem he gets right he gets a point, for every problem he gets wrong I get a point! We keep score on a sheet of paper. He wins every time and loves it!

Great for kids who don't like to do work books
My child distroys everything she is a tomboy and carless. It's just in her nature. These hold up well and are fun. She does them over and over. Not sure if you can buy books separate though.

Too easy
Too easy.My daughter needed support for first grade basics more than halfway through the year. The first book is much too easy and she got through almost all of the second book herself easily (with the exception of telling time and money, which they haven’t learned). If you are looking for a good supplement there is a hot dots first grade 50 page math book that I found was more geared towards what they were working on and was more challenging. The only thing I don’t like about that one is it is a larger size and my daughter enjoys the little books. I would say if your child is ok with the basics and you ate looking to supplement, this is going to be too easy. Also, we found there are times when the pen would say that a wrong answer was correct.

Educational toys
My class enjoys playing with it. They love the sounds that ot makes when they get the answers correct. Also I like the learning aspect of the Hot dots.
