In fact the reason I purchased them was to replace unbalanced cables with them. They are well made and perfect for recording and sound reinforcement. **Q: Can i use this to connect my outboard compressor (xlr) to my interface (1/4" trs)?** A: When making any kind of adaptive connection there are a number of issues and concerns. Any connection using XLR requires phantom power for the XLR device, you need to have that available at some point that will satisfy the XLR device. Phantom power will not usually be transferred through all adapters. It has been my experience that phantom power is not always where you want it to be when you need it. Another issue is pin-out; you would expect that there would be some standardization with this stuff, but not the case sadly. What I have done in the past is just try it, I've never had any damage caused by this trial and error method, but still, be aware that it could happen. Consider calling Sweetwater and speaking to one of their experts, then buy the adapter from THEM if they think it will work. For a basic understanding; a "balanced" cable does NOT carry two separate "hot" signals, it carries a hot and a cold of the SAME signal, with the cold side being 180° out of phase. This is why balanced cables are preferred for distance runs or recording, the hot/cold cancels outside noise interference. A balanced or XLR cable does not carry two separate hot signals or channels. **Q: Hows the soldering job on these cables? Do you happen to know how these compete with other brands like Pro Co and Mogami?** A: The soldering job is every bit as good as the other brands. These cables are a fantastic value for the price and the only difference between these cables and ridiculously-priced cables like Mogami is thicker shielding and sometimes over-marketed "braiding." Most of the time, I purchase cable and connectors in bulk, and custom-build my own. However, the price of these was hard to pass up. I ordered pairs of the 15 ft. (mixer to interface) and 6 ft. cables (interface to monitors) for my home studio. Each cable was professionally packaged when it arrived. What is striking, at least to me, is the unquestionable thickness of the cable itself. While most on the market are often thin and flimsy, the casing on this cable is built for durability and isolation. For me, this was particularly impressive since these cables are being used in my home recording studio where sound isolation is a HUGE factor! Connectors are firm and well-constructed on both ends. Gold plated TRS ends guarantee connectivity and excellent sound. I dare say, I probably would save almost nothing by trying to replicate these on my own -- they are outstanding in every sense of the word. Initial sound check and demo created flawless sound on recording and playback without exception. No pops, crackles, or hum -- they are perfect. Yeah, you could buy MUCH more expensive cables (pre-made) on the market, but these are a shining example of why you don't have to.
