Very clear instruction book for printmaking

If you want to learn how to make prints, or already make them and want to learn more or improve your technique, this is a good book. I recommend it as clear and easy to understand.

Good Book for artists or hobbiests beginning a new direction with Linocuts.

This book goes back to the mid 1950's and may be considered antiquated in some areas; however, I found it interesting in how some things can be made instead of purchased. For example, I love the book's directions for making envelopes by hand to fit the print project. And it gives the formula from making the glue gum that can be applied to the envelope. Like manufactured envelopes today, this gum dries and can be moistened later to seal the envelope. It also appears that a number of other practical uses can be made from items in the kitchen or shed. Meanwhile, it gives a nice overview of how to perform linocuts. And this book offers enough instruction to allow one to begin this art with enough knowledge to give a good attempt at performing linocuts. On the reverse side, their are areas in the book that can be skipped and are not useful in the present age. However, unlike many current publications, the directions are concise, practical, and professional. Moreover, the book is very inexpensive. I paid less than seven dollars for it with shipping. As such, it makes a great beginner book because it does have a lot of practical and interesting content, though some areas should be skipped. After reading most of this book, I made my first linocut and it was a success! I have now purchased two other books of varying help. But I think that this book was a good place to start and was inexpensive.I give the book 5 stars because it is a great deal for the price and should be considered by any artist or hobbyist wishing to begin to learn the art of linocutting, while being on a budget.

pretty good, but very outdated.

carving techniques really haven't changed too much since this book was printed, but on the list of materials it has many items that are big no-nos in printing today, such as mineral spirits. these items should not be used, unless one works with a resporater because these chemicals are very bad for your health.

great quick reference

I love this book. It's especially handy for those of us who just need a quick reference, refresher or just want to get printing. As for any outdated info, that can be easily remedied by picking up just about any art supply company catalog.

The book is outdated

Because there is no way to "look inside", I picked this book because of the nice cover. The book is listed as a 1972 addition, which is pretty old too, but not as old as it really is. This is a reprint of the book from 1950-s. The photos are of poor quality, techniques are outdated, and the projects don't look as nice as the cover. No single picture from the cover is presented inside, so the cover is deceptive. I am returning the book.

Two Stars

Un livre de 1955, des techniques dépassées. Les photos pas très contrastés copie du livre original...

scholastic

first of all: the 175 illustrations anticipated on the cover are just pictures of technical projects, no animals,no flowers,no drawings you can reuse for a work. apart from that -which is something that can disappoint you the first time you open the book- I think this is an old, genuine, scholastic book. no big inventions, but the explanation for printing without the need of anything 'advanced'. the home made cookie!

Outdated and not detailed enough

Written in 1955 it has become rather outdated. This book is a reproduction and subsequently the quality is quite poor. The author addresses the student or craftsman and assumes one has a workshop in their garage. It makes for odd reading. The actual process of lino printing is described very briefly like “draw your initials, transfer them onto lino and carve”. There, you no longer need this book.

Good for beginners

This is a good basic book for those who are starting out though a bit dated. I am now looking for a newer book that has more projects and designs in. For a used book the condition is really good as well.
