quick, compact, good capacity
A fast, compact drive powered by its USB-C connector. A solidly built cable is included plus a USB-A converter. There's a single activity LED near the connector. Write performance on a USB-C 3.1 host interface was decent, with 1MB sequential writes running at 112MiB/s, but dropping to 94MiB/s presumably along the slower (outer) parts of the spinning disk. Linux/BSD people, here's how the drive showed up for me: WD My Passport 260D 2007 Fixed Direct Access SPC-4 SCSI device 1907697MB (3906963456 512 byte sectors) Note the enclosure shows up as a separate device, BSD sees it as: ses1: WD SES Device 2007 Fixed Enclosure Services SPC-4 SCSI device ses1: SES Device USB-C is a selling point for me despite some skeptical reviewers here. It isn't meant to be faster, necessarily, that's a function of the interfaces on each end. But it's always a more robust & simpler connector. It lasts long than microUSB (by design) and doesn't need to be flipped back and forth repeatedly until it finally fits. I generally won't buy a device with an older USB connector unless there's no option. USB-C all the way. A great little drive, and nice-looking too. I might wish it were SSD or that the LED was on the front, but otherwise no complaints.

Versatile and sturdy, great hard-drive for gamers or computer use.
I had originally gotten this for extra storage on my computer. It never had a problem with my files and transferred them really quickly. There is a small buzz if you are doing a bunch of large files at once and when it turns on or off, but it is not loud enough to be distracting or go over the sound of any music, no matter how quiet. You can really only hear it in a completely quiet room. I eventually changed it to an extra storage device for my PS4. It adapted really well, just make sure any previous data saved on there is removed before connecting it to the console, as it will need to reconfigure it to an external storage device specifically for PS4 games. The little cord that connects it to the console or computer is a bit small and stiff, but I like that because it makes more room for other cables, and I know it won't break any time soon. The carrying case is quite sturdy, and the little hook is very useful, especially when I transported it around with my laptop. I like that it is strapped in. I even fit another flash drive in there with the cord. Another thing is data management. It is preferred and recommended to eject the device before powering the connecting device off or disconnecting it, but I have had my PS4 turn off before without doing that, pulled a cable, and I was given a repair screen on my PS4. The repair takes 2 minutes at most, and I was always able to get it repaired through the PS4 and had no problems or missing games/data after it had been restored. Overall a very sturdy, quick, and versatile hard-drive with a nice case.

Good inexpensive, portable storage.
Good inexpensive portable storage. I like that they don’t require separate power. Have bought seven WD Passport external hard drives in the past year. Two of them are these silver 4Tb drives. Overall happy with them. One star off because they are a little slow when copying files, and seem to never power down / sleep if they are mounted but not in use. (On a MAC, freshly formatted ExFat, Spotlight-excluded). To avoid them getting too warm, I unmount the drive when I want them to stop churning. (Note: I accidentally unplugged one of my Passport drives while it was not in use, but still mounted, and it required an overnight disk repair with Disk Utilities app to recover it.)

The hardware is good. I couldn't get the software to work.
I have owned multiple Western Digital storage devices in the past. In fact, they're still working, but they're getting older, so I bought two new Western Digital storage devices because I need a reliable back-up. I have no problem with the hardware. The hardware is excellent. I have had no problems with my back-ups and I have not lost data. However, the software that comes with the new Western Digital storage devices simply would not work for me. I'm running some older computers with Windows 8 and Windows 10, but I don't think the operating system is the problem. The first problem I had was that the new WD software tried to update the old WD software that was already installed on my computer, but the update was a fail, so I had to completely uninstall all of the WD software and start from scratch. However, the new WD software still didn't work. For one thing, apparently you have to be online to use the software at all, even just to set your password. I went online and tried again, and it still didn't work. Reasons unknown. I ended up just reformatting both of the new drives and installing a third-party encryption software, and I am making my back-ups manually. Which is fine, because my backups are fairly small. But I am irked because I bought the WD drives because they are supposed to have built-in password protection, and I am irritated that I had to do an additional step. However, if the new ones are as reliable as the old ones, then I will still be happy. I have been using them several months with zero problems, so I think they are reliable.

Reliable, durable speedy little hard drive
I've been using Western Digital passport drives since way back in 2005. In fact, I still have an old 40? GB that still works - they're pretty durable, but I get a new one every 7-8 years to make sure I don't have one go bad, and to keep up with any technology advancements like USB 3 speeds. This little guy lived up to my expectations; it was fast, it seems just as well-made and durable as prior versions, and the space let me put on all the episodes of bluey (for my kids) and most of the marvel movies as well (also for my kids), and still have some space to stick on some fun comedy and action flicks (... also for my kids, eventually). It's light weight, fast, durable, and what's not to like? It's a great little drive.

Works as intended (I think)
I make 2 backups of my PC every week -- one goes on this drive. I carry it with me. The other goes on another drive and I keep it in a safe. I'm limited in what I can say about the drive because I've never had to use it to recover.

Failed 3 Days Short of the 1 Year Mark...
I decided to grab this newer model rather than the USB-Type A variant I'd been using for years. Big mistake. The drive sat on a large desk away from everything else. Never moved. Never jostled. Never any issues until today - no sign anything was amiss. Yet here I sit, in absolute ruin, three days short of the one year mark, with a totally dead drive and 4TB of data gone. Do yourself a favor and stick with the non-"Ultra" models. These new ones are trash, while the old ones are still going strong many years later.

Purchased for new gaming computer
I have a new gaming computer with a solid state boot drive. Knowing that SSDs can have problems writing multiple times to the same locations I purchased this external hard drive knowing it may need enough power and good connections to work well. Until I received an appropriate power supply for the external hub I was unable to see the memory on this drive. Also the usb cord supplied with this drive is poor quality. I purchased a high quality usb cord, dual usb-c and it works better than the one WD supplied, at least that appears to be the case. I am using it to install my programs and to store my data. Games tend to get updated and rewrite things a lot, especially the gaming clients like Steam, GOG Galaxy and the Epic Games Store. So I purchased this hard drive for the space (4 TB) and to provide a high speed external drive for my games. So far so good. I will update with further information as I use this drive. I was pleased to see the memory was there as, until I got the power for the hub, I was not able to see the hard drive memory. The drive showed up but with no memory. Keep this in mind if you purchase this drive, it needs a good connection and adequate power to get the maximum performance and even, perhaps, to work. I do have an older WD My Passport Ultra that I have had for years. It has been stable and reliable. I hope this new hard drive from WD is reliable and stable for me. Time will tell.
