Great product and works great fit my 1979 Johnson 9.9 perfect.

Worked for less than a year before the ring gear broke right off the pinion.
I installed this on my 15hp johnson outboard engine and it lasted less than a year with only around 30 fishing trips until the ring gear broke completely off of the pinion! Now I have a practically brand new starter with a broken gear which makes it useless unless l can locate a replacement gear which I most certainly should not be doing with less than a year of very light use. Very upsetting 🤔

My not be the problem on my motor
I give this 4 stars because they don't have a rating that indicates the part may be great but I don't know because it did not fix my problem. The motor itself is great quality and meets or exceeds the one in my outboard. The problem is after replacing this, the motor will still not start from the electric start. It may be something else but I have not figured it out yet. With a quick pull of the start line, my motor starts fine so I have not invested any more money in the electric start option. Maybe next summer! Great part and assumed it would be the fix if the motor was the problem.

Start with the battery, then the switch, then the starter.
Seems a great product. Buddy bought one and it fit perfectly, got me interested in fixing the electric start on mine. I started with the battery, which was new. Checked my switch, which was not. Removed the switch with the battery disconnected, connected the battery, got a 12.66 volt reading from the wires off the switch, tapped them together carefully, and the starter worked! Didn't have to buy one, but it's a great price on an important part for an engine that is fast becoming obsolete, so a spare may be in order.
