Our SmartyPants Adult Complete gummy vitamins have a fruit pectin base - however, we do use a gelatin that is pork-derived for the sole purpose of encapsulating the Omega 3 EPA+DHA fish oil. We have recently released a new Organic/Vegetarian line of our gummy vitamins that will include Omega 3's from flax oil - and therefore will not include gelatin. We have not included Iron into our chewable gummy vitamins for a number of reasons - mainly because Iron can be harmful if ever consumed in amounts beyond your specific daily needs - and because we make a gummy vitamin that is very delicious, we didn't want to include anything that could be harmful if someone were to take more than our recommended daily dosage. Iron is the leading cause of supplemental overdose. As we wanted to make a product that tasted delicious, we decided it would be irresponsible to include Iron in the product. We wanted to know that if a child (or adult) ended up sneaking a whole bottle, they may end up with an upset stomach but not a life threatening condition. In addition, because Iron oxidizes Fish Oil, we couldn't include both in one product. We focus on the nutrients toughest to get from foods safely in the amounts our body needs. Because we need 2-3 servings of fish a week to get the Omega 3 DHA and EPA that we need, we end up not getting enough. The taste, doctors instructions to limit our fish intake to no more than once a week due to mercury risks (even higher for kids), and environmental concerns (overfished tuna, farmed salmon) all conspire to make it extremely difficult to get enough Omega 3s from fish. Vegetarian forms of Omega 3s frequently lack EPA (just as critical as DHA to your health). So while some might have difficulty getting enough Iron, it is readily available in dark leafy greens.
