If you have a cold wallet for cryptocurrency then you know you have a seed phrase of anywhere between 12 and 24 words used to secure that wallet. What you might not know, though, is that the words are generated from a list of 2,048 words defined by the BIP-39 standard. The whole point of seed phrases is that a brute force attack to gain access would be impractical. Just a 12-word seed phrase has about 340 undecillion possible combinations making it nearly impossible for anyone or any machine to use brute force (i.e. trying every combination of words one by one) to reveal the seed phrase. If you transfer crypto to your cold wallet and then lose track of your seed phrase, you're likely not getting it back. Money is gone for good! Hypnosis or similar would be your only hope of recovering your seed phrase if you can't remember any of the words. That's where this engraver comes in handy. It allows you to etch your seed phrase(s) into metal plates, creating a nearly indestructible permanent record of your seed phrase(s). This is just part of the issue, though. You can still lose the plates! So these plates simply help store the words on a medium that isn't prone to damage or destruction like ink and paper is. Water, fire, bored cat. Those can easily destroy paper, but none of those things could easily destroy these plates. Of course, keeping your seed phrase in a document in the cloud works, too. I'd recommend storing these plates in a fireproof safe bolted to the floor of your house. Three plates are included and each plate holds up to 24 words. If you have a single wallet, you could create a plate for that, plus two backup plates for the same wallet to be stored in different locations. If you have multiple wallets, each plate could hold the seed phrase for a different wallet. The plates are designed to be screwed together in case you want to keep them connected. This engraver can be used on just about anything. It's great for labeling things to declare ownership. I remember 30+ years ago when I was going off to college my dad took a little screwdriver and very sloppily etched my name on the back of an expensive calculator I was taking with me. I was slightly horrified because although it labeled the device as mine, it looked absolutely terrible. Having an engraver like this solves that type of problem. From calculator to water bottle, and everything in between, this engraver can prove useful for marking your belongings. This kit includes almost everything you need to avoid a seed phrase disaster. I have owned several "engravers" in my lifetime but this is a full on rotary tool! "Charger" as it says on the plastic housing of item is 12.6v 1A. I don't think there is a battery in this tool it's actually a power supply. It has a blue light visible when supplying power and when you unplug it remains on just very faint until you press the ok button and drain out a capacitor. The rotary tool itself has a collet to hold bit securely. I really like the feel of the button to lock the head from spinning when you loosen or tighten the bit holder. The shape and molding around the on off button are first class and very indicative of attention to detail. The plastic housing is thick and not able to be bent or cracked easily. The metal plates are very bright and almost make you not want to touch them and add fingerprints. So full disclosure I don't have great handwriting when the tip of the writing apparatus isn't spinning but it's a little hard to make this text look good when the design requires you to hold back much farther than you typically would. The style and sharpness of the bit means you can write much faster than you would think - there is no need to trace over back and forth as you would with a typical engraver. I added a picture where I wrote on the back of one plate "Amazon Review - testing out control of this device" above the hole in center and then I wrote out the A to Z alphabet and tried Luck Crab in cursive then I put luck crab in quotes. This is a very unique product I wasn't looking for or expecting to find but a really good idea to protect important information from fire etc. I really also like that you can stack the plates face side in and combine them with a fastener to keep face side from damage. Great value for anyone needing to backup information in a unique way.
