U Turn [DVD]

Film noir in colour (& filters)
Stone used such words as "liberating" and "fun" to talk about U Turn's relatively quick production schedule of 50 days. Oliver Stone crawls through Quentin Tarentino's home turf here in this grat 1988 movie. It is as black and violent as a film can be, sort of Pulp Fiction meets Reservoir Dogs in the heat. Brilliant casting makes U Turn sizzle like roadkill on an Arizona blacktop. Sean Penn, Jennifer Lopez, Billy Bob Thornton, and Nick Nolte, John Voight dig right to the heart of human darkness, and then some.....Surely many viewers will find the level of violence (Nick Nolte - "Let him watch") and the completely depraved characters unappealing at best--my ex-girlfriend walked away less than halfway through this classic 1988 movie. Did i mention the fat cow is my ex??Anyhoo, I was riveted by the story, the characters, the action, and the stylistic approach Stone takes, with heavy use of filters and quick cuts to ravens, bleached skulls, setting suns, old photographs, and the like. That approach and the eerie score by Ennio Morricone also reminded me that the old Italian gypsy is still alive and working on soundtracks. Brilliant.

Star cast, great story, brilliant acting
Unusual story with an unexpected cast besides Sean Penn and J Lo (both brilliant!). Bobby, played by Sean Penn, gets stuck in a small town with no possible exit other than to kill the wife (J Lo) of a real estate guy (Nick Nolte) at the latter's behest or to kill him at her demand. There is a crazy cop, a wisdom spouting native American, a jealous boyfriend of a girl who makes eyes at every one - in short, a living hell from which Bobby is struggling to escape. The movie, directed by Oliver Stone, is brilliant in every way but not for everyone as it is not a typical Hollywood movie.

One of my favourite films
Captures the weirdness of a remote Arizona desert town brilliantly - mysterious and crazy-funny by turns. The diner scene with Sean Penn and Joaquin Phoenix ('Toby N Tucker' / 'TNT') cracks me up every time I watch it. A brilliant movie deserving of much better reviews than it got when it was released.

One of my favourites
Loved the movie so much when it was first released that i had to visit infamous Superior AZ... The place is weirder in real life... Still worth to see if you like this amazing movie. What a music what an atmosphere! Actors play is exemplary - you are just immersed in action for full 2 hours. So dark!

Any Oliver Stone movie is worth a look and U Turn is no exception.
Any Oliver Stone movie is worth a look and U Turn is no exception. Lead by the eminently watchable Sean Penn on the run/road from a sleazy past, the outwardly simple plot involving his U Turn into the small Arizona town of `Superior' for car repairs quickly gets more bizarre, sinister and out of control with every scene. The cast a screwball mix of incendiary beauty (Jennifer Lopez), wild beast husband (Nick Nolte) infatuated sheriff (Powers Booth) crazed car mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton) among others, inveigle an increasingly desperate Penn in a web of deceit, dark humour and murder for love and money. The movies direction and cinematography has Stones signature hall marks (with an occasional nod to 'Natural born killers' desert noir) and there is the added bonus of an original Morricone musical score. U Turn is another entertaining and worthy edition to the Stone movie collection.

Very different
My husband and I visited Superior, where the filming took place, during a trip to Arizona and this is one of his favourite films. I purchased it as a stocking filler for Christmas and he was delighted! Not my type of film particularly, but well worth a watch!
