The missing link. *by N***T on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on September 5, 2010* If you're looking at this book, you've probably already studied ASL to some degree and are looking to further develop your signing and/or teaching skills. You surely know that there is a large selection of introductory books on very basic signs, a number of available dictionaries - some barely adequate and some quite good, and a small number of dense, academic works that delve into various aspects of the linguistics of ASL. To me, at least, there seems to be a conspicuous gap: a scant few books go into any depth describing and teaching real-world ASL grammar.The popular "Learning American Sign Language" skims the surface, and "Grammar, Gesture and Meaning in American Sign Language" goes into substantial depth, but reading this book produced the big "Ah ha!" moment for me. It's not glamorous, not cutting edge, but it doesn't have to be. Instead, it is well structured, includes an appropriate amount of pictures, illustrations, diagrams, etc. to break down the structure of a visual language into manageable pieces so that they can be understood and reassembled into expressions with real meaning and color. The book is on point and useful from the start.Life is a journey, not a destination, but all the same, I wish I would have just found this book first - at the beginning of my search. I'll bet that you won't be disappointed with this one. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ It is a language not a vocabulary book. *by R***N on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on May 4, 2018* For an in-depth study I like this course and to teach it at my own pace, If one had to teach it in an 8 week course or 16 week course with only a couple days week, this would not be enough time to do this course justice, The style of teaching this course accurate and a deep study into this Language, If your only interested in learning vocabulary this is not the book for you. If your interested in the Language, its the Perfect one. (of course there are many usages today that can be different you learn to adapt and cross those bridges) after all it is from the 1990's you have to understand your learning a Language, not just signs to say English, for a lack of words I would say "English verbiage" You are crossing over into another world. I would love to have the Video's to go with the course but have not found them available, I would pay the cost to get them if I knew where to find them. ### ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Helps Fill in the Gaps *by S***R on Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on December 20, 2019* This is an excellent resource for the ASL student who is gaining confidence in the language and is serious about learning more about ASL grammar, syntax, and sign formation. Though all ASL curriculums cover signs and grammar rules to an extent, this book is helpful for explaining many of the conventions that may not be addressed in other curriculum. This book is not a light read and would best be supplemented with the DVD, but if you have a basic understanding of how to read ASL glosses, you will be able to follow the conversation examples.
